Andal
Andal ( ta, ஆண்டாள்), also known as Kothai, Nachiyar, and Godadevi, was the only female Alvar among the twelve Hindu poet-saints of South India. She was posthumously considered an avatar of the goddess Bhudevi. As with the Alvar saints, she was affiliated to the Sri Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. Active in the 8th-century, with some suggesting 7th-century, Andal is credited with two great Tamil works, ''Thiruppavai'' and '' Nachiyar Tirumoḻi'', which are still recited by devotees during the winter festival season of Margaḻi. Andal is a prominent figure for women in South India and has inspired several women's groups such as Goda Mandali. Andal, Paschim Bardhaman
Andal is a census town in the Andal CD block in the Durgapur subdivision of the Paschim Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Geography Location Andal is located at . It has an average elevation of 76 metres (249 feet). This area lies between the Damodar River and the Ajay River. Singaran, a small stream about 35 km long has its origin near Ikra in the Jamuria area, flows past Topsi and Andal and joins the Damodar near Waria. Andal (also spelled Ondal) is a community development block that forms an administrative division in Durgapur subdivision of Paschim Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Geography Andal is located at . Andal CD Block is part of the Ajay Damodar Barakar tract. This area is sort of an extension of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. It is a rocky undulating area with laterite soil, with the Ajay on the north, the Damodar on the south and the Barakar on the west. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal, in the eighteenth century, led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared. Andal Venkatasubba Rao (1894–1969), popularly known as Aandaalamma, was an Indian social worker, educationist and the co-founder of ''Madras Seva Sadan'', a Chennai-based charitable organization working for the welfare of women and children. Born in 1894 in Chennai, the capital city of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, she did her early schooling at Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and the Presidency Girls' High School, Madras. In 1928, she married M. Venkatasubba Rao, a judge at Madras High Court who would later be knighted by the British Queen, The couple founded ''Madras Seva Sadan'', a charitable organization, the same year.
