''Ancistrocarphus'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. It contains two known species, both native to western North America. These plants are often treated as members of genus '' Stylocline'', but they are not as closely related to ''Stylocline'' species as they are to plants of other genera, especially '' Hesperevax''. The better-known species in this genus is '' Ancistrocarphus filagineus'', which is known by the common names woolly fishhooks and false neststraw. ''Ancistrocarphus filagineus'' is a North American species of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, known by the common names woolly fishhooks and hooked groundstar. It is native to western North America, including Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, California, and Baja California. ''Ancistrocarphus filagineus'' grows in many types of habitat, including bare, rocky habitat with clay or serpentine soils and recently burned areas. It is a petite annual herb rarely more than 15 cm (6 inches) tall. It has gray, woolly-haired herbage. Ancistrocarphus Keilii
''Ancistrocarphus keilii'' is a rare species of flowering plant known by the common name Santa Ynez groundstar. It is endemic to Santa Barbara County, California, where it is known only from three populations in the Santa Ynez River drainage. There were 180 individuals estimated in existence, until 2023, when a few thousand bloomed. The plant was described to science in 2004. ''Ancistrocarphus keilii'' grows in sandy soils in chaparral habitat adjacent to oak woodlands. The plant is considered to be vulnerable to extinction because of its rarity, its populations are located in habitat that is likely to be disturbed or developed, and because it apparently has no effective method of biological dispersal. The Gnaphalieae are a tribe of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. It is most closely related to the tribes Anthemideae, Astereae, and Calenduleae. Asa Gray
Asa Gray (November 18, 1810 – January 30, 1888) is considered the most important American botanist of the 19th century. His ''Darwiniana'' was considered an important explanation of how religion and science were not necessarily mutually exclusive. Gray was adamant that a genetic connection must exist between all members of a species. He was also strongly opposed to the ideas of hybridization within one generation and special creation in the sense of its not allowing for evolution. He was a strong supporter of Darwin, although Gray's theistic evolution was guided by a Creator. As a professor of botany at Harvard University for several decades, Gray regularly visited, and corresponded with, many of the leading natural scientists of the era, including Charles Darwin, who held great regard for him.
