Anchorage Assembly
The Anchorage Assembly is the governing body of Anchorage, Alaska. The Assembly has eleven members elected to three-year terms from six districts. It is responsible for creating and approving the city's annual budget, appropriating municipal funding, and managing elections. Seats in the Assembly are officially nonpartisan. Matt Claman
Matthew W. Claman (born 1959) is an American politician and attorney serving as a member of the Alaska House of Representatives. Claman previously served as the acting Mayor of Anchorage after Mark Begich resigned from the position to serve in the United States Senate. Early life and education Claman was raised in Dallas, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Colorado College. Claman moved to Alaska in 1980, working as a prep cook at a mining camp. Claman returned to Texas to earn Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law. He then returned to Alaska and began to practice law. Career Claman is a trial and appellate attorney with Lane Powell, a regional law firm, and is past President of the Alaska Bar Association. Charles Wohlforth
Charles P. Wohlforth (born 1963) is an author and journalist, former public official, and consultant. He has written extensively about Alaska and has collaborated with other authors on a variety of topics. Wohlforth's books include ''The Whale and the Supercomputer: On the Northern Front of Climate Change'', which won a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, in the Science and Technology category, in 2004, and more than 10 other books about science, environment, medicine, history, biography, and travel. Dan Sullivan (Anchorage Mayor)
Daniel Albert Sullivan (born June 16, 1951) is an American businessman and politician who served as the mayor of Anchorage from 2009 to 2015 and on the Anchorage Assembly from 1999 to 2008. The son of Anchorage's longest-serving mayor, George M. Sullivan, he was the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor of Alaska in the 2014 election but he and incumbent Governor Sean Parnell were defeated by the ticket of Independent Bill Walker and Democrat Byron Mallott. Early life and education Sullivan was born the third of seven sons, and nine children overall, of George Murray and Margaret Mary (née Eagan) Sullivan. His parents were from the Alaskan communities of Valdez and Fairbanks, respectively. Arliss Sturgulewski
Jane Arliss Sturgulewski (née Wright; September 27, 1927 – April 7, 2022) was an American businesswoman and Republican politician from the U.S. state of Alaska. In a political career in which she started appearing in the spotlight in 1975, she represented Anchorage in the Alaska Senate from 1979 to 1993. Twice during off-years in re-election to her four-year Senate term (in 1986 and 1990), she won the Republican nomination for governor of Alaska against mostly conservative opposition in blanket primaries. The second time, in 1990, she came out in third place behind Walter Hickel and runner up Tony Knowles, which was the second of three times in Alaska's history a major-party nominee placed third. Lidia Selkregg
Lidia Lippi Selkregg (1920 – August 14, 1999) was an Italian geologist and professor of regional planning at the University of Alaska Anchorage. In the days following the 1964 Alaska earthquake, Selkregg helped organize a group of local geologists to gather important data about earthquake damage to inform future recommendations about building stability. She also helped promote earthquake safety, land preservation, and economic development in the Anchorage area. Early life and education Selkregg was born Lidia Lippi in Florence, Italy in 1920. Her father died when she was three years old, and she lived in Italy and North Africa with her mother and two brothers. Kevin Gerald Meyer (born May 9, 1956 in Beatrice, Nebraska) is an American politician who served as the 14th lieutenant governor of Alaska from 2018 to 2022. He was a Republican member of the Alaska Senate from January 20, 2009 to December 3, 2018, representing District M. Anna MacKinnon (formerly Fairclough; born November 11, 1957) is an American Republican politician who is formerly a member of the Alaska Senate, representing District G from 2013 to 2018. Prior to that, she served in the Alaska House of Representatives, representing the 17th district, from 2007 to 2013. Tony Knowles (politician)
Anthony Carroll Knowles (born January 1, 1943) is an American politician and businessman who served as the seventh governor of Alaska from 1994 to 2002. Barred from seeking a third consecutive term as governor in 2002, he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 2004 and again for governor in 2006. In September 2008, Knowles became president of the National Energy Policy Institute, a non-profit energy policy organization funded by billionaire George Kaiser's family foundation, and located at the University of Tulsa. Alaska Senate
The Alaska State Senate is the upper house in the Alaska Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Alaska. It convenes in the Alaska State Capitol in Juneau, Alaska and is responsible for making laws and confirming or rejecting gubernatorial appointments to the state cabinet, commissions and boards. With just twenty members, the Alaska Senate is the smallest state legislative chamber in the United States. Fred Dyson
Frederick John Dyson (born January 16, 1939) was a Republican member of the Alaska Senate, serving since 2003. He represented District I from 2003 through 2012 until redistricting placed him in District F in 2013. District I contained the core community of Eagle River, where Dyson resides, and stretched across the northern edge of Anchorage municipal boundaries to Government Hill, also including the core area of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
