Anchor Society
The Anchor Society CIO is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation based in Bristol, England which supports older people in need in the Bristol and Bath region (BS, BA and GL Postcodes). Its work primarily centres around grants to individuals, housing and other projects which benefit older people. The original unincorporated Anchor Society was formed by the Whigs in 1769, when it held a dinner at the Three Tuns, a tavern on the site of the present Corn Exchange in the centre of the medieval quarter of Bristol, when 22 members were present. Some 46 years after his death, the initial founders wished to emulate Edward Colston's philanthropy, so at this inaugural dinner the President, Gilbert Davies took up a collection for their charitable work. An anchor is a device, normally made of metal , used to secure a vessel to the bed of a body of water to prevent the craft from drifting due to wind or current. Sir Frederick Wills
Sir Frederick Wills, 1st Baronet (22 November 1838 – 18 February 1909) was a businessman, philanthropist and politician in the United Kingdom. He was a director of W. D. & H. O. Wills, a famous tobacco company headquartered in Bristol which later merged into the Imperial Tobacco Company. Wills was educated at Amersham Hall and served as the Liberal Unionist Member of Parliament (MP) for Bristol North from 1900 to 1906. He was made a Baronet in 1897, of Northmoor in the County of Somerset, & Manor Heath in the County of Hampshire. He also served as the president of the Anchor Society in Bristol in 1882, and was a governor of Guy's Hospital in London until his death in 1909. The Wills Library at the GKT School of Medical Education is named in his honour; he was its primary benefactor. Family Frederick Wills was a son of Henry Overton Wills II & Isabella Board. Sir David James Vernon Wills, 5th Baronet (born 1955) is the 5th Baronet of Blagdon, a title created in 1923 for the president of the Imperial Tobacco Company. Patrick Seager Hill, T.D. (16 January 1915 – 17 December 2010) was a British clothing manufacturer, who was a pioneer and developer of safety and fire protective clothing. Early life and military service Hill was born on 16 January 1915 in Bristol, England to clothing manufacturer William John Hill and Nora Kathleen Gough of Clifton, Bristol. His uncle was noted Dallas Texas architect Bertram Charles Hill. Another uncle Stanley Frederick Hill was awarded the Military Cross & Bar in WWI. Sir Herbert Ashman, 1st Baronet (11 June 1854 – 26 September 1914) was the first Lord Mayor of Bristol. He was born in Yeovil, Somerset, the son of Thomas Nathaniel Ashman and was educated at the Independent College, Taunton. His father moved the family to Bristol when he was only a few months old, where Herbert joined his father's leather processing business at the age of 15. He later became head of his own company of Herbert Ashman & Co., leather factors, manufacturers and importers, based in Broadmead, Bristol. He was the Liberal Councillor of St Paul's ward from 1890 to 1900 and elected Mayor of Bristol in 1898 and 1899. Sir Frank William Wills (17 August 1852 – 26 March 1932) of Berkeley Square, Bristol, England, was a member of the Wills tobacco family, who became a noted British architect and went on to serve as Lord Mayor of Bristol. Early life and career Frank Wills was born on 17 August 1852 in Bristol into a large family, as the fifth of seven children born to Henry Overton Wills II and his second wife Mary Seccombe (1815–1897).
