Ancholme
The River Ancholme is a river in Lincolnshire, England, and a tributary of the Humber. It rises at Ancholme Head, a spring just north of the village of Ingham and immediately west of the Roman Road, Ermine Street. It flows east and then north to Bishopbridge west of Market Rasen, where it is joined by the Rase. North of there it flows through the market town of Brigg before draining into the Humber at South Ferriby. It drains a large part of northern Lincolnshire between the Trent and the North Sea. The river has been used by humans since at least 800 BC, seen by the excavation of a planked boat at Brigg. Letters patent for improvements to the river are known from 1287 onwards. Major change occurred in 1635, when a new straight channel was constructed from Bishopbridge to Ferriby. River Rase
The River Rase is 16 mile (25 km) long tributary of the River Ancholme that flows through Lincolnshire, in the east of England. Course The source of the river is a series of springs known as Churn Water Heads, that occur on Bully Hill north of Tealby in the Lincolnshire Wolds. These springs occur where the permeable chalk geology of the Wolds meets the impermeable mudstone and clays that underlie most of the Rase catchment. The river flows in a south-westerly direction through the village of Tealby, where it is crossed by the Viking Way, a long-distance footpath that crosses the Wolds. To the west the Rase reaches the market town of Market Rasen, from which the river takes its name, and where it meets a tributary that flows through the local racecourse. Bishop Norton, Lincolnshire
Bishop Norton is a village and the main settlement of the civil parish of the same name in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. The village is approximately north-west from the market town of Market Rasen, and is close to the A15 road. According to the 2001 Census it had a population of 233, including Atterby and increasing to 308 at the 2011 census. The name of Bishop Norton derives from the fact that it was the most northerly of the twelve manors belonging to the Bishop based upon his chief manor at Stow. Barlings Eau
Barlings Eau is a small river near Barlings, Lincolnshire, England. It is a tributary of the River Witham, joining it near Short Ferry. It acts as the central spine for a number of other small rivers, which drain the low-lying land to either side. Most of its course is within the area managed by the Witham Third District IDB, an Internal Drainage Board responsible for land drainage. One of their pumping stations is on the banks of the river. There is also an Environment Agency pumping station, which is used to pump water from the River Witham system to the River Ancholme, to maintain flows and water quality when required. Bishopbridge
Osgodby is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish, including Kingerby, Kirkby and Usselby, and West Rasen in its own civil parish, was 660 at the 2011 census. Osgodby is close to the A1103 and A46 roads, and north-west from the market town of Market Rasen. South Ferriby
South Ferriby is a village in North Lincolnshire, England. It is situated on the south bank of the Humber Estuary and west from the Humber Bridge. North Ferriby is directly opposite on the Estuary's north bank. Village population was 651 in 2011. History South Ferriby dates back at least to Roman times when there was a major settlement. Ingham, Lincolnshire
Ingham is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies geographically north of the centre of Lincoln and it can be accessed by taking the B1398 road, which runs parallel to the main A15 (Ermine Street). Scunthorpe Steelworks
The Iron and Steel Industry in Scunthorpe was established in the mid 19th century, following the discovery and exploitation of middle Lias ironstone east of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Initially iron ore was exported to iron producers in South Yorkshire. Later, after the construction of the Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway (1860s) gave rail access to the area local iron production rapidly expanded using local ironstone and imported coal or coke.
