Phytosociology
Phytosociology, also known as phytocoenology or simply plant sociology, is the study of groups of species of plant that are usually found together. Phytosociology aims to empirically describe the vegetative environment of a given territory. A specific community of plants is considered a social unit, the product of definite conditions, present and past, and can exist only when such conditions are met. In phyto-sociology, such a unit is known as a phytocoenosis (or phytocoenose). A phytocoenosis is more commonly known as a plant community, and consists of the sum of all plants in a given area. It is a subset of a biocoenosis, which consists of all organisms in a given area. More strictly speaking, a phytocoenosis is a set of plants in area that are interacting with each other through competition or other ecological processes. Coenoses are not equivalent to ecosystems, which consist of organisms and the physical environment that they interact with. A phytocoensis has a distribution whic ...

Plant Taxonomy
Plant taxonomy is the science that finds, identifies, describes, classifies, and names plants. It is one of the main branches of taxonomy (the science that finds, describes, classifies, and names living things). Plant taxonomy is closely allied to plant systematics, and there is no sharp boundary between the two. In practice, "plant systematics" involves relationships between plants and their evolution, especially at the higher levels, whereas "plant taxonomy" deals with the actual handling of plant specimens. The precise relationship between taxonomy and systematics, however, has changed along with the goals and methods employed. Plant taxonomy is well known for being turbulent, and traditionally not having any close agreement on circumscription and placement of taxa. See the list of systems of plant taxonomy. Background Classification systems serve the purpose of grouping organisms by characteristics common to each group. Plants are distinguished from animals by various trai ...

Acharius Medal
__NOTOC__ The Acharius Medal is awarded by the International Association for Lichenology (IAL) for lifetime achievement in lichenology. The organization resolved at its 1990 meeting that it would simultaneously honor professional achievement and commemorate Erik Acharius (recognized as the "Father of Lichenology") by presenting a medal in his name. The first Acharius Medal was made in 1846 by the Royal Swedish Mint for the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, although the original purpose for that medal is not known. Because the Swedish Mint still had the dies for the original medal, the IAL arranged for new medals to be made. The first of the new medals were awarded in that same year (1992) at the association's congress in Båstad, Sweden. The medal The medal is silver, with Acharius' profile on one side and the recipient's name on the other. Recipients Source: 2021: * Per Magnus Jørgensen * James D. International Association For Lichenology
The International Association for Lichenology (IAL) is an organisation that encourages the understanding of lichens and lichenology, and promotes their study and conservation worldwide. It unites lichenologists across the globe, as well as national and regional organisations into one group. It is affiliated to the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The IAL organises field courses and excursions, as well as symposia which are the biggest events in lichenology on the international level. The 8th International Symposium will be held in Helsinki, Finland, in August 2016. The IAL publishes a biennial journal, the International Lichenological Newsletter which was the raison d'etre for the IAL being formed in 1967 in order to provide a forum for lichenologists worldwide to communicate with one other. Nowadays the IAL also operates an online discussion forum for lichenologists known as 'lichens-L'. History The International Lichenological Association arose out of the 10th I ...

Crespoa
''Crespoa'' is a genus of five species of lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. Species in this genus are characterized by having an upper thallus surface that is wrinkled and reticulately ridged to coarsely foveolate (having small pits or depressions). Description ''Crespoa'' species have a distinctive thallus structure, with a strongly reticulately ridged and wrinkled upper surface, and medullary stictic and constictic acids, with the exception of ''C. schelpei'', which has medullary protocetraric acid. Distribution All of the species in ''Crespoa'' have a more or less tropical distribution, although the range of ''C. carneopruinata'' also extends into southern France and Italy, while the distribution of the type species ''C. crozalsiana'' includes the US and southern Europe. ''C. scrobicularis'' has been reported from Oceania and South America, including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Venezuela. Taxonomy Species in ''Crespoa'' were originally considered part o ...

Cresporhaphis
''Leptosillia'' is a fungal genus in the monogeneric family Leptosilliaceae. The genus was circumscribed by Austrian mycologist Franz Xaver Rudolf von Höhnel in 1928. The genus was monotypic for a long time, containing only the type species, ''Leptosillia notha''. Molecular phylogenetic analysis published in 2019 showed that the genus belongs to the order Xylariales, and that the genus ''Cresporhaphis'' should be included in ''Leptosillia''. These analyses placed ''Leptosillia'' as a sister taxon to family Delonicicolaceae, and so a new family, Leptosilliaceae, was circumscribed to contain it.
