Ashley Miller (director)
Ashley Miller (August 11, 1877 – November 19, 1949) was an American director, screenwriter, playwright, and actor. He directed 133 films between 1909 and 1923. Miller was born in Cincinnati and attended schools in Detroit, Michigan. Miller's stage debut came in September 1904 when he portrayed Francois in a production of ''Richelieu''. He went on to act with stock theater companies in Boston, Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia. Plays in which he performed include ''Prince Otto'', ''Romeo and Juliet'', ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'', ''My Lady Peggy Goes to Town'', and '' The Parisian Model''. His roles in the latter two productions were singing parts. Miller formed a troupe that presented plays in New York City's schools and settlement houses. He also worked as a director of silent films for the Edison Biograph Studio. Edison Manufacturing Company
The Edison Manufacturing Company, originally registered as the United Edison Manufacturing Company and often known as simply the Edison Company, was organized by inventor and entrepreneur Thomas Edison and incorporated in New York City in May 1889. Miriam Nesbitt
Miriam Nesbitt (September 14, 1873 in Chicago – August 11, 1954 in Hollywood) was an American stage and film actress. Biography Born Miriam Schanke or Skanke, she studied at the Stanhope-Wheatcroft Dramatic School, before landing a part in Daniel Frohman's play ''The Tree of Knowledge'' under the stage name Miriam Nesbitt. She went on to perform on Broadway a number of times in the first decade of the twentieth century. She also acted in over 120 silent films, beginning in 1908 with ''Saved by Love''. General Film Company
The General Film Company was a motion picture distribution company in the United States. Between 1909 and 1920, the company distributed almost 12,000 silent era motion pictures. Formation The General Film Company was formed by the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC) in an attempt to monopolize distribution. In 1909, the General Film Company tried to seize the equipment of independent distribution companies to discourage their activities. Conflict Using their control over several film patents, the General Film Company and MPPC tried to force independent distribution companies to sell out or lose their patent licenses. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. William Norwood Wadsworth (7 June 1874–6 June 1950) was an American actor of the silent era best known for his roles in early Westerns, playing the villain in ''What Happened to Mary?'' (1912), the first Western film serial and for playing Samuel Pickwick in ''Mr Pickwick's Predicament'' (1912), an early screen adaptation of ''The Pickwick Papers''. Wadsworth was born in Pigeon Cove in Massachusetts in 1874, the son of William Wadsworth (born 1842) and Adelia K Leonard (born 1846). Yale Boss (October 18, 1899 – November 16, 1977) was an American child actor of the silent screen. Biography New York-born Boss was one of the screen's first child stars. He was already a stage veteran when he made his screen debut in Thanhouser's ''The Actor's Children'' (1910). He appeared on Broadway opposite Adeline Genée in ''The Silver Star''. Later he became one of Edison Studios's most popular players, but the studio constantly had to battle rumors questioning his true age. Boss's popularity waned in the late 1910s and he later worked as a prop man. By the time of his death at age 78, the former actor was operating a garage in Augusta, Georgia.
