Amy (sometimes called Our Girl Amy) is an American syndicated gag cartoon centering on a young, blond girl with a pony tail. Created by Harry Mace on October 2, 1961, it was originally syndicated by the Register and Tribune Syndicate. Jack Tippit
Jack Tippit (October 19, 1923 – October 14, 1994) was an American cartoonist whose work includes the comic strip '' Amy'', which he produced from 1964 through 1991. Early life Tippit was born in Texas. He graduated from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) in 1947. He also attended Syracuse University, graduating magna cum laude with a BFA in 1949. Tippit had a long career in the military, serving as a combat pilot in World War II and as a pilot, trainer, and other roles during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1974 with the rank of colonel. Career Tippit's cartoons appeared in a number of high-profile publications in the 1960s to 1990s, including ''The New Yorker'', ''Ladies' Home Journal'', '' Look'' and ''The Saturday Evening Post''. Register And Tribune Syndicate
The Register and Tribune Syndicate was a Print syndication, syndication service based in Des Moines, Iowa, that operated from 1922 to 1986, when it was acquired by King Features to become the Cowles Syndicate affiliate. At its peak, the Register and Tribune Syndicate offered newspapers some 60 to 75 features, including editorial cartoonist Herblock, comic strips, and commentaries by David Horowitz, Stanley Karnow, and others. Throughout the 1940s the syndicate distributed the weekly "Spirit (comics), The Spirit Section," a 16-page tabloid (paper size), tabloid-sized newsprint comic book supplement eventually sold to 20 Sunday newspapers with a combined circulation of as many as five million copies. Gag Cartoon
A gag cartoon (also panel cartoon, single-panel cartoon, or gag panel) is most often a single-panel cartoon, usually including a caption beneath the drawing. A pantomime cartoon carries no caption. In some cases, dialogue may appear in speech balloons, following the common convention of comic strips. As the name implies—"gag" being a show business term for a comedic idea—these cartoons are most often intended to provoke laughter. Popular magazines that have featured gag cartoons include ''Punch'', ''The New Yorker'' and ''Playboy''. A ponytail is a hairstyle in which some, most or all of the hair on the head is pulled away from the face, gathered and secured at the back of the head with a hair tie, clip, or other similar accessory and allowed to hang freely from that point. National Cartoonists Society
The National Cartoonists Society (NCS) is an organization of professional cartoonists in the United States. It presents the National Cartoonists Society Awards. The Society was born in 1946 when groups of cartoonists got together to entertain the troops. They enjoyed each other's company and decided to meet on a regular basis. NCS members work in many branches of the profession, including advertising, animation, newspaper comic strips and syndicated single-panel cartoons, comic books, editorial cartoons, gag cartoons, graphic novels, greeting cards, magazine and book illustration.
