Caltex is a petroleum brand name of Chevron Corporation used in the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, and Southern Africa. It is also the brand name of non-Chevron petroleum companies in some countries (such as New Zealand, and previously Australia and South Africa) under a trademark licensing agreement with Chevron. Caltex was also the name of the joint venture between Chevron and Texaco which used the Caltex brand name in its operations, until both parent companies merged in 2001 to form ChevronTexaco (later renamed simply to Chevron in 2005). Hanson Australia is a premixed concrete, aggregates and precast company. Founded in 1949 as Pioneer Concrete and later re-branded to Pioneer International, it was taken over by Hanson in 1999. Z Energy is a New Zealand fuel distributor with branded service stations. It comprises some of the former assets of Shell New Zealand and Chevron New Zealand. Shell left the New Zealand fuel distribution business in April 2010, selling its operations to Infratil and New Zealand Superannuation Fund. The former Shell operations were rebranded as Z Energy in 2011. Since May 2022, it is a subsidiary of Australian petroleum company Ampol. It operates under the Z Energy and Caltex New Zealand brands. There are 227 Z Energy service stations around New Zealand, including 60 in Auckland. There are also 138 Caltex sites, including 39 in Auckland. Sir William Gaston Walkley
Sir William Gaston Walkley (1 November 1896 – 12 April 1976) was a New Zealand oil company executive. Walkley was a founder of Australian oil company Ampol and was credited with being one of the early pioneers in opening up the northwest of Australia to oil exploration. In 1956 he instituted the Walkley Awards, the premier award for excellence in Australian journalism. Personal life Walkley was born in Otaki, New Zealand, on 1 November 1896 to Herbert and Jessie Walkley, who were British immigrants. He spent most of his early life close to Palmerston North, where his father worked as a draper. In 1917 Walkley enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, getting as far as England. Golden Fleece was an Australian brand of petroleum products and service stations operated by Harold Sleigh and Company. A partnership was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1893 by shipowner and merchant Harold Crofton Sleigh (1867–1933) and manufacturer and shipowner John McIlwraith (1828–1902). In 1913 the company took delivery of its first consignment of motor spirit from the United States and marketed it in Australia as "Golden Fleece". Initially, motor spirit was sold in drums only—the first Golden Fleece pump being installed in 1920. The Kurnell Refinery was a crude oil refinery located in Kurnell on Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia. It had a refinery capacity of . It was operated by Caltex Australia, and owned by the Chevron Corporation. History Construction began on the refinery in 1953. The refinery was built in 1956 by Caltex on of land located in Botany Bay, close to Sydney. About 3,000 men worked at the project's various sites during the peak of construction.
