Amphitryon (film)
''Amphitryon'' is a 1935 German musical film. Written and directed by Reinhold Schünzel, it is based on plays by Molière, Plautus, and Heinrich von Kleist, which in turn are based on Greek mythology. The film is known by a variety of other names: ''Amphitryon – Happiness from the Clouds'', ''Amphitryon – Aus den Wolken kommt das Glück'' in Austria, ''Amfitryon'' in Greece, ''Anfitrione'' in Italy, ''Det gudomliga äventyret'' in Sweden. ''Amphitryon'' was filmed in Ufa-Atelier, Neubabelsberg, from 2 February 1935 – May 1935. It was one of UFA's many multiple-language version films: a French version, ''Les dieux s'amusent'' (The gods are having fun), was shot at the same time. Synopsis Amphitryon is a Theban general away at war. The god Jupiter disguises himself as Amphitryon to seduce Amphitryon's wife, Alkmene. Reinhold Schünzel
Reinhold Schünzel (7 November 1888 – 11 November 1954) was a German actor and director, active in both Germany and the United States. The son of a German father and a Jewish mother, he was born in St. Pauli, the poorest part of Hamburg. Despite being of Jewish ancestry, Schünzel was allowed by the Nazis to continue making films for several years until he eventually left in 1937 to live abroad. Life in Germany Reinhold Schünzel (or Schuenzel) started his career as an actor in 1915 with a role in the film ''Werner Krafft''. He directed his first film in 1918's ''Mary Magdalene (1920 film), Mary Magdalene'' and in 1920 directed ''The Girl from Acker Street'' and ''Catherine the Great (1920 film), Catherine the Great''. Adele Sandrock (; born Adele Feldern-Förster; 19 August 1863 – 30 August 1937) was a German-Dutch actress. After a successful theatrical career, she became one of the first German movie stars. Early life Sandrock was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the daughter of the German merchant Eduard Sandrock (1834–1897) and his Dutch wife, Johanna Simonetta ten Hagen (1833–1917). Käthe Gold
Käthe Gold (11 February 1907 – 11 October 1997) was an Austrian actress. Born in Vienna, she trained in that city as an actress and then went to Bern, Breslau (now Wrocław) and Munich. In 1932 she went to Berlin, where she remained until 1944. It was during those years that she had her greatest successes on the stage in plays such as Goethe's ''Faust'' (Gretchen), Shakespeare's ''Hamlet'' (Ophelia), and Ibsen's ''A Doll's House'' (Nora). In 1944, Gold went to Zurich, and in 1947 she returned to Vienna, where she played at the Burgtheater. Gold's stage career prevented her from appearing in many movies. Of the few films in which she did act, ''Amphitryon'' (1935, playing Alkmene), ''The Girl from Barnhelm'' (1940) and, after the war, ''Rose Bernd'' (1957) and ''Karl May'' (a 1976 biopic about Karl May) are notable. Paul Kemp (actor)
Paul Kemp (20 May 1896 – 13 August 1953) was a German stage and film actor. Kemp worked as a piano accompaniest for silent films, and then served as an ambulance driver on the Western Front during the First World War. Post-war he moved into acting on the stage in Düsseldorf and Hamburg. His career really took off when he moved to Berlin in 1929, appearing in the hit stage version of the novel ''Menschen im Hotel'' by Vicki Baum. He made his film debut in 1930, shortly after the introduction of sound film. He appeared prolifically in German and Austrian films until his death in 1953.
