Amphastar Pharmaceuticals
Amphastar Pharmaceuticals is a publicly traded American speciality pharmaceutical company. It was incorporated in May 2004 and primarily develops, manufactures, and sells inhalation and intranasal products. One of its products is naloxone, an injectable generic drug that treats opioid overdose, and the company was criticized when it doubled the price of the drug from around $20 to $40 in 2015 during the opioid epidemic. In February 2017, the FDA rejected the company's application to market a device that delivers naloxone intranasally. In March 2018, the company won a patent infringement lawsuit brought against it by Momenta Pharmaceuticals and Sandoz Inc in an ongoing antitrust case. In April 2023, Amphastar Pharmaceuticals bought Baqsimi from Eli Lilly in a deal worth over $1bn. Naloxone
Naloxone, sold under the brand names Narcan (4 mg) and Kloxxado (8 mg) among others, is a medication used to reverse or reduce the effects of opioids. It is commonly used to counter decreased breathing in opioid overdose. Effects begin within two minutes when given intravenously, and within five minutes when injected into a muscle. The medicine can also be administered by spraying it into a person's nose. Naloxone commonly blocks the effects of opioids for 30 to 90 minutes. Multiple doses may be required, as the duration of action of some opioids is greater than that of naloxone. Administration to opioid-dependent individuals may cause symptoms of opioid withdrawal, including restlessness, agitation, nausea, vomiting, a fast heart rate, and sweating. Glucagon, sold under the brand name Baqsimi among others, is a medication and hormone. As a medication it is used to treat low blood sugar, beta blocker overdose, calcium channel blocker overdose, and those with anaphylaxis who do not improve with epinephrine. It is given by injection into a vein, muscle, or under the skin. A version given in the nose is also available. Common side effects include vomiting. Other side effects include low blood potassium and low blood pressure. It is not recommended in people who have a pheochromocytoma or insulinoma.
