Ampelokipoi, Thessaloniki
Ampelokipoi ( el, Αμπελόκηποι, meaning vineyards) is a suburb of the Thessaloniki Urban Area and was a former municipality in the regional unit of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality of Ampelokipoi-Menemeni, of which it is a municipal unit. The population was 37381 in 2011, with a land area of 1.803 km². Ampelokipoi is the seat of the new Ampelokipoi-Menemeni municipality. Areas Ampelokipoi include the areas of Heptalofos, Skeparni, Kaistri, Philippou and Akriton. Sport activities The municipal sports club AO Ampelokipon has football, basketball, volleyball, swimming and athletic clubs. The local stadium was a training center for the Olympic Games of 2004. Menemeni is a suburb of the Thessaloniki Urban Area and was a former municipality in the Thessaloniki (regional unit), regional unit of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ampelokipoi-Menemeni, of which it is a municipal unit. It neighbors Evosmos, Ampelokipoi, Thessaloniki, Ampelokipoi, Thessaloniki and Echedoros. Menemeni includes the Quarter (country subdivision), quarters of Vosporos, Agios Nektarios (Menemeni), Agios Nektarios, Dialogi and Lachanokipoi. According to the 2011 census the population was 14,746 inhabitants. The municipal unit has an area of 7.989 km2. Thessaloniki ( el, Μητροπολιτική Περιοχή Θεσσαλονίκης ''Mitropolitiki Periohi Thessaloníkis'', ''Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki'') is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Region of Central Macedonia and its capital is the city of Thessaloniki. Geography The regional unit stretches from the Thermaic Gulf in the southwest to the Strymonic Gulf in the east. Two bodies of water are located in the north, Lake Koroneia in the heart of the regional unit and Lake Volvi in the east. The Thessaloniki metropolitan area or larger urban zone (LUZ) is the complete area covered and directly influenced by Thessaloniki. The metropolitan area traditionally consisted of the municipality of Thessaloniki and its immediate surroundings, what is today referred to as the Thessaloniki urban area. However, since the mid to late 1990s, the areas surrounding the urban area, have succumbed to urban sprawl and what used to be agrarian communities are rapidly urbanizing and being developed into suburbs or exurbs.
