Amite County Courthouse
Amite County Courthouse is in Liberty, Mississippi, the county seat for Amite County, Mississippi. It was built from 1839–1840 and is the oldest extant county courthouse building in the state. It is a Mississippi Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A historical marker commemorates its history. Slave auctions were held at the courthouse. Annex wings were added to the building with PWA funding in the 1930s. Other additions and renovations have been made over the years. The building is red brick. Louis Allen tried to register to vote at the courthouse in the 1960s; no African American had voted in the county since the 1890s. He also spoke out about threats and violence including by the sheriff. He was beaten and murdered. Liberty, Mississippi
Liberty is a town in Amite County, Mississippi. It is part of the McComb, Mississippi McComb micropolitan area, Micropolitan Statistical Area. It has a population of 728 according to the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Amite County. The town can be accessed via Interstate 55 in Mississippi, I-55, then west on Mississippi Highway 24. McGehee Air Park is located about a mile west of town. Liberty celebrates its Heritage Days Festival during the first weekend of each May. Air Cruisers manufacturing plant is located in Liberty. Owned by Zodiac Aerospace, the plant produces evacuation slides, life rafts, and life vests for the aviation industry. Amite County is a county located in the state of Mississippi on its southern border with Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,720. Its county seat is Liberty. The county is named after the Amite River, which runs through the county. Amite County is part of the McComb, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Amite County was established in February 1809 from the eastern portion of Wilkinson County. It was named after the Amite River. French explorers had named the latter for the friendly (''amitié'' in French) indigenous Houma people they encountered in the region. The legislation that established the county authorized the appointment of five commissioners to find a site for the county seat, near the county's center and near a good spring; its name was to be Liberty. At this time, the total population of the county numbered about 4000 people, about 80% of whom were middle-class families of seventeenth-century Virginia stock who had gradually migrated ... Louis Allen
Louis Allen (April 25, 1919 – January 31, 1964) was an African-American businessman in Liberty, Mississippi, who was shot and killed on his land during the civil rights era. He had previously tried to register to vote and had allegedly talked to federal officials after witnessing the 1961 murder of Herbert Lee, an NAACP member, by E. H. Hurst, a white state legislator. Civil rights activists had come to Liberty that summer to organize for voter registration, as no African-American had been allowed to vote since the state's disenfranchising constitution was passed in 1890. Allen was harassed and jailed repeatedly by Amite County Sheriff Daniel Bryant Jones (January 3, 1930 – July 26, 2013). The day before he planned to move out of state, Allen was fatally shot on his property.
