Sir Edwin Hardy Amies Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, KCVO (17 July 1909 – 5 March 2003) was an English fashion designer, founder of the Hardy Amies (fashion house), Hardy Amies label and a Royal Warrant holder as designer to the Elizabeth II, Queen. Early life Hardy Amies was born Edwin Amies on 17 July 1909 in Maida Vale, London. His father was an architect for the London County Council. His mother was a saleswoman for Madame Gray at Machinka & May, London, and then Madame Durant on Dover Street, London. In his teens, he adopted his mother's maiden name, Hardy—and always cited her as the inspiration for his chosen professional path. Pre-War career Amies was educated at Brentwood School, Essex, leaving in 1927. Although his father wanted him to attend Cambridge University, it was then his ambition to become a journalist. Hardy Amies London (Limited) is a UK-based fashion house specializing in modern luxury menswear. Sir Hardy Amies founded the house in 1946. He was one of the pioneers of the ready-to-wear menswear market in the 1950s and 1960s. Amies was commissioned to create high-profile specialized clothing for customers, including the British World cup and Olympic teams, Stanley Kubrick for '' 2001: A Space Odyssey'', and Queen Elizabeth II. The fashion house has changed ownership several times throughout its history and, for a time, was the property of Fung Capital. In 2018, the company went into administration for a second time. The Savile Row store was closed in March 2019, and Hackett London took over the space in June as its flagship store. Olive Pond Amies
Olive Pond Amies (c. 1844–1917) was an American educator, lecturer, and editor from the U.S. state of New York. She founded the training school for teachers in Lewiston, Maine; served as editor of a Universalist Church publication; and was the first president of the Woman's Health Protective Association of the United States. Amies favored the temperance movement and women's suffrage. Biography Olive Ponds was born ca. 1844, in Jordan, New York. She was two weeks old when her father died, and the mother and child went to the home of the grandparents in New Britain, Connecticut. There the mother worked untiringly with her needle for the support of herself and her two children. The older child, a boy, was placed in the care of an uncle, and to Olive the mother took the place of father, mother, brother and sister.
