Amesbury
Amesbury () is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is known for the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge which is within the parish. The town is claimed to be the oldest occupied settlement in Great Britain, having been first settled around 8820 BC. The parish includes the hamlets of Ratfyn and West Amesbury, and part of Boscombe Down military airfield. Etymology The derivation of the name of the town is uncertain. It may derive from an Anglo-Saxon named ''Ambre'', or from the Old English ''amore-burh'' meaning 'fortification frequented by buntings or/and Yellowhammers'. It has also been suggested that the name is derived from Ambrosius Aurelianus, leader of Romano-British resistance to Saxon invasions in the 5th century. Geography Amesbury is located in southern Wiltshire, north-northeast of Salisbury on the A345. Alexia Amesbury (born , née Jumeau) is a Seychellois politician and a lawyer by profession. Under the umbrella of the Seychelles Party for Social Justice and Democracy, she contested in the 2015 presidential election to become the first woman to contest a Seychellois presidential election. Early life Amesbury was born at Praslin, Mahé, Seychelles and grew up in the St. Elizabeth’s Convent in Seychelles until she moved to Kenya in 1961 where she completed her O' and A'levels. Education At the age of 37, she matriculated at a University in the United Kingdom to study Law before proceeding to the London School of Economics and Political Science where a master's degree in International Law. USS ''Amesbury'' (DE-66/APD-46), a of the United States Navy, was named in honor of Lieutenant (jg) Stanton Morgan Amesbury (1916–1942), who was killed in action while flying from the aircraft carrier during Operation Torch in 1942. Amesbury Abbey
Amesbury Abbey was a Benedictine abbey of women at Amesbury in Wiltshire, England, founded by Queen Ælfthryth in about the year 979 on what may have been the site of an earlier monastery. The abbey was dissolved in 1177 by Henry II, who founded in its place a house of the Order of Fontevraud, known as Amesbury Priory. The name Amesbury Abbey is now used by a nearby Grade I listed country house built in the 1830s, currently a nursing home. History Amesbury was already a sacred place in pagan times, and there are legends that a monastery existed there before the Danish invasions. There may have been an existing cult of St Melor which led Ælfthryth to choose Amesbury. Melor, the son of a leader of Cornouaille and a boy-martyr, was buried at Lanmeur and venerated in Brittany, but a later tradition claims that some of his relics were brought to Amesbury and sold to the abbess. Amesbury Archer
The Amesbury Archer is an early Bronze Age (Bell Beaker) man whose grave was discovered during excavations at the site of a new housing development () in Amesbury near Stonehenge. The grave was uncovered in May 2002. The man was middle aged when he died, estimated between 35-45, and is believed to date from about 2300 BC. He is nicknamed "the Archer" because of the many arrowheads buried with him. The grave contained more artefacts than any other early British Bronze Age burial, including the earliest known gold objects ever found in England. It was the first evidence of a very high status and wealth expressed in a burial from that time. Previously Bronze Age society had been assumed not to have been particularly hierarchical. Charles Dundas, 1st Baron Amesbury
Charles Dundas, 1st Baron Amesbury (5 August 1751 – 7 July 1832) was a British politician. Background and education Charles was a younger son of Thomas Dundas of Fingask, MP for Orkney and Shetland (1768–1771) and a commissioner of police in Scotland (31 January 1771), who died on 10 April 1786. His mother was his father's second wife, Janet, daughter of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the bar from the Middle Temple, but devoted himself to a political life. His father's younger brother Lawrence became a successful banker and an MP for over 30 years. Charles's older brother Thomas was a British Army officer who became Governor of Guadeloupe. Michael Lee Amesbury (born 7 May 1969) is a British politician serving as Member of Parliament (MP) for Weaver Vale since 2017. A member of the Labour Party, he was Shadow Minister for Local Government until 2022. Charlie Amesbury (born 8 April 1986 in Portsmouth) is a former rugby union footballer who last played professionally on the wing or full back for Bristol in the RFU Championship, and previously for Harlequins, Sale Sharks and Newcastle Falcons in the Aviva Premiership. He also played for England Sevens. Amesbury played for Cambridge University in The Varsity Match in 2016 and in 2017, when he scored a try and captained the side to victory over Oxford. Barbra Amesbury (born 1948) is a Canadian philanthropist, singer-songwriter, composer and filmmaker, who had several Top 40 hits in Canada in the 1970s. Amesbury was the long-time partner of Canadian philanthropist Joan Chalmers until her death in 2016. Known as Bill Amesbury during her active musical career, Amesbury came out as transgender after leaving the music business. Music Amesbury's biggest hit was "Virginia (Touch Me Like You Do)", which was also the first single (1974) to be released on the Casablanca Records label, reaching #14 in Canada. Amesbury Railway Station
Amesbury railway station was a station in the county of Wiltshire in southern England. It was located on the Bulford Camp branch line, which diverged from what is now known as the West of England Main Line at a triangular junction between Grateley and Idmiston Halt. When it was open, Amesbury was the nearest station to Stonehenge and carried a lot of traffic to the military areas in and around Salisbury Plain, particularly during the Second World War in the preparations for D-Day.
