Amerongen
Amerongen () is a town in the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands, on the border of the Utrecht Hill Ridge. It lies about 7 km (4.3 mi) southwest of Veenendaal (10.5 km or 6.5 mi by road). The landscape rises from the flat water meadows of the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine) to the Utrecht Hill Ridge ("Utrechtse Heuvelrug"). The highest point in the western Netherlands is located 2 km east of the village. The Amerongense Berg (Amerongen Mountain) has a height of 69 metres above sea level. History The history of Amerongen is closely related to that of Amerongen Castle. This castle was first established in 1286 as a wooden donjon but was rebuilt in stone. It was damaged or destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times during the following centuries. Amerongen Castle
Amerongen Castle (Dutch: ''Kasteel Amerongen'', ) is a castle in Amerongen, Utrechtse Heuvelrug, Netherlands. It was built between 1674 and 1680, on the site of a medieval castle that had been burned down by the French in 1673. The gardens still contain historic elements such as a conservatory dating from the 1890s. In 1918, the former German Kaiser Wilhelm II signed his abdication here and stayed till 1920, when he moved to Huis Doorn. History The current building was designed by the architect Maurits Post as a baroque palace for the owners Godard Adriaan van Reede and his wife Margaretha Turnor. Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Utrechtse Heuvelrug (; en, "Utrecht Hill Ridge") is a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It was formed on 1 January 2006 by merging the former municipalities of Amerongen, Doorn, Driebergen-Rijsenburg, Leersum, and Maarn. Name The name of the municipality is derived from the Utrecht Hill Ridge, a ridge of sandhills that covers part of the province of Utrecht. All the former municipalities that merged into Utrechtse Heuvelrug are situated on the southern part of this ridge. In this southern part lies the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, that covers and was established in 2003. Andrieskerk
The Andrieskerk ("St. Andrew's church") is a nowadays Protestant church in the Dutch village of Amerongen. Utrecht Hill Ridge
Utrecht Hill Ridge ( nl, Utrechtse Heuvelrug) is a ridge of low sandhills that stretches in a direction from southeast to northwest over the Dutch province of Utrecht and over a part of North Holland. The total length of the region is about 50 km. It covers an area of approximately 23,000 hectares. The part of the ridge in North Holland is commonly called ''Het Gooi'' in Dutch, the Gooi (area) in English. On the southeastern side the ridge rises sharply from the valley of the Nederrijn (“Lower Rhine”). Elst (Utrecht)
Elst is a village in the central Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Rhenen, Utrecht, about 5 km southwest of Veenendaal. Until 1 January 2006, the western tip of the village was in the municipality of Amerongen. The village was first mentioned in 1448 as "op Elscher maelstat", and means "place where alder trees grow". Elst developed into a settlement on the southern flank of a hill and became a linear settlement along the Utrecht-Arnhem road. In 1819, a little church was built. The economy during the 19th century was mainly based on the growth of tobacco plants. In 1840, Elst was home to 631 people. The grist mill 't Wissel was built in 1855. Zeist
Zeist () is the capital and largest town of the municipality of Zeist. The town is located in the Utrecht province of the Netherlands, east of the city of Utrecht. History The town of "Seist" was first mentioned in a charter in the year 838. The original settlement was located at the present ''Dorpsstraat''. In the late 12th century, a church was built here.
