''American Tongues'' is a 1988 sociolinguistic documentary examining American English dialects and accents and perceptions thereof. It was produced and directed by Louis Alvarez and Andrew Kolker. The Center for New American Media won a Peabody Award for the film in 1987. Louis Alvarez And Andrew Kolker
Louis Alvarez (born January 23, 1955) and Andrew Kolker (born February 20, 1952) are American documentary filmmakers whose works deal with various aspects of American society and culture. Their films have been shown frequently on the American Public Broadcasting Service and are notable for their use of humor in the examination of serious subjects such as social class and politics. Alvarez and Kolker's work has been recognized by two Peabody Awards and two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards. Early life Alvarez and Kolker first met in New Orleans in the mid-1970s as activist videomakers working in the city's poor neighborhoods, and their earlier work portrays life in New Orleans and surrounding parishes. The George Foster Peabody Awards (or simply Peabody Awards or the Peabodys) program, named for the American businessman and philanthropist George Peabody, honor the most powerful, enlightening, and invigorating stories in television, radio, and online media. Molly Ivins
Mary Tyler "Molly" Ivins (August 30, 1944 – January 31, 2007) was an American newspaper columnist, author, political commentator, and humorist. Born in California and raised in Texas, Ivins attended Smith College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She began her journalism career at the ''Minneapolis Tribune'' where she became the first female police reporter at the paper. Ivins joined ''The Texas Observer'' in the early 1970s and later moved to ''The New York Times''. She became a columnist for the '' Dallas Times Herald'' in the 1980s, and then the ''Fort Worth Star-Telegram'' after the ''Times Herald'' was sold and shuttered (1991). Her column was subsequently syndicated by Creators Syndicate and carried by hundreds of newspapers.
