American Pianists Association
The American Pianists Association is a performing arts organization based in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, that holds two national, quadrennial piano competitions in alternating 2-year cycles: the Classical Fellowship Awards and the Jazz Fellowship Awards. Only American citizens ages 18–30 are eligible to compete. The organization hosts a recital series in non-competition years. The Fellowship Awards are among the most lucrative piano prizes in the world, valued at over $100,000. History The association was "born" in New York City in 1979 as the Beethoven Foundation, conceived by the late Victor Borge, Tony Habig of Kimball International and Julius Bloom, former general manager of Carnegie Hall. Victor Borge
Børge Rosenbaum (3 January 1909 – 23 December 2000), known professionally as Victor Borge ( ), was a Danish-American comedian, conductor, and pianist who achieved great popularity in radio and television in the North America and Europe. His blend of music and comedy earned him the nicknames "The Clown Prince of Denmark", "The Unmelancholy Dane", and "The Great Dane". Dan Tepfer
Dan Tepfer (born 1982 in Paris, France) is a French-American jazz pianist and composer. He is best known for his 2011 album ''Goldberg Variations/Variations'' and his 2019 multimedia project ''Natural Machines''. Biography Dan Tepfer grew up in Paris, France in a musical and scientific family. He received a bachelor's degree in astrophysics from the University of Edinburgh and a master's degree in jazz piano performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston. He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, where he works as a pianist and composer. He tours around the world, with frequent appearances in Europe in particular. Frederic Chiu
Frederic Chiu (born 20 October 1964) is an American classical concert pianist. Education Chiu was born in Ithaca, New York. He studied music seriously with William Eltzroth at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN, with Karen Shaw (and also studied computer science) at Indiana University, then pursued his musical studies in New York at the Juilliard School, where he studied with Abbey Simon. He also studied with Aube Tzerko, Marvin Wolfthal and Marian Rybicki. During his formative years, he won numerous piano competitions, including the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition and the Music Teachers National Association Competition, both in 1984. Lori Sims is an American pianist. After winning the Gold Medal at the 1998 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, Lori Sims performed throughout North America, Europe, and China including engagements with the NordDeutscheRadio Orchester in Hannover, Israel Philharmonic, Indianapolis Symphony, Utah Symphony, and Malta. Nicholas Roth
Nicholas Roth is an American classical pianist, recording artist and professor of piano at Drake University in Des Moines. He appeared as soloist with the St. Louis Symphony and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra under Raymond Leppard, among others. Roth has been featured in recitals and festivals throughout the United States and Europe. He was a 1993 Beethoven Fellow of the American Pianists Association. Rick Germanson (born May 29, 1972) is an American jazz pianist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Career Germanson started playing piano at a young age. After winning the grand prize at the American Pianists Association's Jazz Piano Competition in 1996, Germanson left Milwaukee for New York City. Jesse Green (born 1971) is an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and record producer. He has recorded three albums as a leader, all released by Chiaroscuro Records. Early life Green is the son of trombonist Urbie Green and vocalist Kathy Preston. "He started tinkering on the piano picking out tunes as early as age three. Christopher Taylor is a prominent United States, American pianist. Taylor graduated from Harvard College, and has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra (United States), National Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Buffalo Philharmonic, among others. Aaron Parks
Aaron Parks (born October 7, 1983) is an American jazz pianist. Career A native of Seattle, Parks studied at the University of Washington at the age of 14 through the Transition School and Early Entrance Program as a double major in computer science and music. At 15 he was selected to participate in the Grammy High School Jazz Ensembles which inspired him to move to New York City and transfer to the Manhattan School of Music. At Manhattan one of his teachers was Kenny Barron. During his final year he began touring with Terence Blanchard's band, recording three albums with him for Blue Note, including the Grammy-winning ''A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina)''.
