American Pharoah Stakes
The American Pharoah Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually near the end of September during the fall meet at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. A Grade I event, it is open to two-year-old horses and is held at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt. The American Pharoah Stakes was run as the Norfolk Stakes through 2011. In 2012, it was renamed to the FrontRunner Stakes after the lease with Oak Tree, the organization that formerly operated Santa Anita's fall meet, ended in 2010. It was renamed again in 2018 in honor of its 2014 winner, American Pharoah, who went on to win the U.S. Triple Crown in 2015. This race is a Road to the Kentucky Derby Prep Season qualifying race. Santa Anita Park is a Thoroughbred racetrack in Arcadia, California, United States. It offers some of the prominent horse racing events in the United States during early fall, winter and in spring. Game Winner (foaled March 6, 2016) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the champion two-year-old colt of 2018. He was undefeated in four starts at age two, including wins in the Del Mar Futurity, American Pharoah Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile. John R. Velazquez (born November 24, 1971) is a Puerto Rican jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. He began his career in Puerto Rico and moved to New York in 1990. Career Eight Rings' first race was on August 4, 2019, at Del Mar, where he came in first. On September 2, 2019, he competed in the Grade 1 2019 Del Mar Futurity, but did not finish after a collision with another horse, Storm the Court. Peter L. Miller (born October 2, 1966) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer who is best known for back-to-back double wins at the Breeders' Cup in 2017 and 2018. He has won multiple training titles at Del Mar Racetrack and his horses have accumulated over $68 million in career earnings. Career Miller was introduced to horse racing by his parents, who owned Winning Ways Stables. He became a groom for Hall of Fame trainer Charlie Whittingham in the 1980s, when his charges included Greinton and Palace Music.
