American Humane Certified
The American Humane Certified program is the nation's first independent, third-party certification program to verify the humane treatment of farm animals. The program was launched in 2000. The purpose of the American Humane Certified program is to give consumers access to humanely-raised food choices. Farms that meet the American Humane Association's criteria may add the American Humane Certified logo to their packaging. Certification process In order to receive the American Humane Certified logo, farms must pass an assessment based on a list of over 200 standards. The standards are unique for each farm animal species. The American Humane Association uses independent firms to perform annual audits on certified farms in order to ensure they are complying with the guidelines. The audits can be unannounced. American Humane (AH) is an organization founded in 1877 committed to ensuring the safety, welfare, and well-being of animals. It was previously called the International Humane Association before changing its name in 1878. In 1940, it became the sole monitoring body for the humane treatment of animals on the sets of Hollywood films and other broadcast productions. American Humane is best known for its certification mark "No Animals Were Harmed", which appears at the end of film or television credits where animals are featured. Mercy For Animals (MFA) is an international nonprofit animal protection organization founded in 1999 by Milo Runkle. MFA's mission is to "prevent cruelty to farmed animals and promote compassionate food choices and policies." MFA has conducted more than 65 investigations of factory farms and slaughterhouses, many of which have resulted in animal cruelty convictions, changes in corporate animal welfare policies, and primetime media coverage. The organization has guided many of the world's largest food companies, including Nestlé, Perdue, and Walmart, in adopting animal welfare policies. Butterball is a brand of turkey and other poultry products produced by Butterball LLC.
