American Gospel
''American Gospel'' is a documentary series about the distortion of Christianity through American culture. Two films have been produced to date: ''American Gospel: Christ Alone'' (2018) and ''American Gospel: Christ Crucified'' (2019). The former deals with the Word of Faith movement and prosperity theology (appearing on Netflix in 2020), while the latter addresses theological liberalism and the meaning of the atonement. The series is the basis for a streaming service, AGTV. A third film, ''American Gospel: Spirit & Fire'', is scheduled for a 2023 release. It will critically examine the view of the Holy Spirit taught in the New Apostolic Reformation movement. Perspective The films adopt a Reformed theological perspective. Word Of Faith
Word of Faith is a movement within charismatic Christianity which teaches that Christians can get power and financial prosperity through prayer, and that those who believe in Jesus' death and resurrection have the right to physical health. The movement was founded by the American Kenneth Hagin in the 1960s, and has its roots in the teachings of E. W. Kenyon. History The Baptist minister E.W. Kenyon (1867–1948) is generally cited as the originator of Word of Faith's teachings. Kenyon's writings influenced Kenneth Hagin Sr., the recognized "father" of the Word of Faith movement. Tony Jones is a leader in the Christian emerging church movement, a theologian, and an author. Personal life Jones grew up near Edina, Minnesota, and graduated from Edina High School in 1990. He later graduated from Dartmouth College and attended both Fuller Theological Seminary and Princeton University, pursuing a doctorate from the latter.
