American Creek (Savonoski River Tributary)
American Creek (also known as Crow Creek) is a stream in northwestern Bruele County, South Dakota, United States, that is a tributary of the Lake Francis Case reservoir on the Missouri River. The creek's headwaters are just east of the town of Pukwana and its mouth is in the city of Chamberlain. In addition to the two communities, the creek flows through the Pukwana and Chamberlain townships. Lake Wanalain is a reservoir along the creek in the western part of Pukwana Township that is created by the Wanalain Lake Dam. American Creek received its name directly from Lewis and Clark. Brule County, South Dakota
Brule County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,247. Its county seat is Chamberlain. History Brule County was created on January 14, 1875, of territory partitioned from Charles Mix County. Its governing structure was also created at that time. However, in May 1875, Brule County was withdrawn from settlement, by order of US President Grant. This order was later annulled, and the organization of Brule County governing structure was completed in September 1879. On March 9, 1883, the area of Brule County was slightly increased by an addition of former Buffalo County lands. The total area of Brule County was further increased on June 4, 1891, when American Island (in the Missouri River) was attached to the county (from the Sioux Reservation). Lake Francis Case is a large reservoir impounded by Fort Randall Dam on the Missouri River in south-central South Dakota, United States. The lake has an area of and a maximum depth of . Pukwana is a town in Brule County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 233 at the 2020 census. Pukwana was laid out in 1881. In 1955, the local residents made a push to get the new Brule County Courthouse relocated to town, however the city of Chamberlain managed to keep it after battling petitions were made. Chamberlain is a city in Brule County, South Dakota, United States. It is located on the eastern bank of the Missouri River, at the dammed section of the Lake Francis Case, close to where it is crossed by Interstate 90. The population of Chamberlain was 2,473 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Brule County.
