American Cougars
The American Cougars (also known as the USA Cougars or United States Cougars) is the only rugby union team from the United States ever to beat a reigning Currie Cup championship team in South Africa. A combined and invitational side from the United States, the Cougars toured South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1978. The team was coached by Ray Cornbill, coach of the Eagles during the 1970s and 1980s. The squad comprised 25 players from 20 clubs, including 3 from Santa Monica Rugby Football Club, 2 each from Chicago Lions RFC, Washington DC RFC, and UCLA RFC. Matches The Cougars played six games in South Africa: against Natal, Combined Universities, Griquas, Northern Transvaal, South African Gazelles and Rhodesia, and won once. The Seattle Rugby Club (formerly Seattle Saracens and Old Puget Sound Beach after a merger) is a rugby union club based in Seattle. The club travels throughout the US and into Canada. In 2014 the club was ranked as the number one US club while also playing in a Canadian league based in British Columbia ( BCRU). Old Puget Sound Beach was a charter member of the now defunct USA Super League in the Pacific Coast USA Rugby territory. The Northern California Rugby Football Union (NCRFU) is the Geographical Union (GU) for Adult rugby union teams in Northern California, as well as northern Nevada. The NCRFU is part of USA Rugby. The NCRFU is traditionally one of the strongest unions in American rugby. Cal Men's Rugby has won over twenty Collegiate Division I national championships, and NCRFU member clubs Stanford Women's Rugby, the Hayward Griffins, the Berkeley All Blues, the Reno Zephyrs, Mission RFC, UCSC Women's Rugby, and the now defunct Old Blue RFC have all won national championships in their respective divisions. Washington Rugby Football Club (WRFC) is a USA Rugby club men's Division I rugby union team based in Washington, DC. Washington RFC formed in February, 1963. The team founded the annual Cherry Blossom tournament in 1966. WRFC plays in the Mid-Atlantic Conference in the Capital Geographical Union. The Kansas City Blues play in the USA Rugby Division 1 competition, which is the highest level of amateur competition within USA Rugby. They also field a Division 2 team that offers new or inexperienced players a chance to learn the game while allowing them the opportunity to advance onto the D1 side. Ray Cornbill is an American former rugby union coach, best known for coaching the United States national rugby union team and the American Cougars. Career Cornbill played for the Montreal Barbarians in 1962-1965 and was its captain in 1964. Cornbill played for the Manhattan Rugby Football Club in 1965 and became its head coach in 1966. In 1976, Cornbill became the head coach of the United States national rugby union team. He left the position in 1983, but returned in 2000 as assistant coach.
