American Civic Association (Binghamton)
The American Civic Association is an immigration services organization located in Binghamton, New York, that provides community integration services to immigrants and refugees in the Greater Binghamton region. It is unrelated to a former national organization and entity of the same name from the early 20th century. The organization's services include refugee resettlement; citizenship classes; assistance with citizenship and green card information; and general help and assistance for immigration- and citizenship-related problems with services provided on a sliding scale of ability to pay by income. The organization is a member agency of (and therefore receives funding from) the United Way of Broome County. Greater Binghamton
The Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area, also called Greater Binghamton or the Triple Cities, is a region of southern Upstate New York in the northeastern United States, anchored by the city of Binghamton. The MSA encompasses Broome and Tioga counties, which together had a population of 247,138 as of the 2020 census. From 1963 to 1983, the MSA also included neighboring Susquehanna County in Pennsylvania, part of which still falls in the Binghamton, NY–PA Urban Area. The Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company ("E-J") was a prosperous manufacturer of shoes based in New York's Southern Tier, with factories mostly located in the area's Triple Cities of Binghamton, Johnson City, and Endicott. Binghamton Shooting
On April 3, 2009, a mass shooting occurred at the American Civic Association immigration center in Binghamton, New York. At approximately 10:30 a.m. EDT, Jiverly Antares Wong (also known as Jiverly Voong), a 41-year-old naturalized American citizen from Vietnam, entered the facility and shot numerous people inside. Wong had taken English language classes there from January to March 2009 before dropping out. Wong killed thirteen people and wounded four others before committing suicide.
