The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which advocates for the legal rights of people with disabilities.Imparato, Andrew J. 2005. The 2016 United States presidential election was the 58th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Anjali Forber-Pratt (born June 22, 1984) is an American wheelchair racer who competes in sprint events at the Paralympic level. She is currently the Director of the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). Before that, she was an assistant professor at Vanderbilt University in the Department of Human & Organizational Development. Life Born in Kolkata, India and abandoned by her mother, Forber-Pratt was adopted by Lawrence Pratt and Rosalind Forber when she was two and a half months old. Raised in Natick, Massachusetts, Forber-Pratt was diagnosed with transverse myelitis when she was four-and-a-half months old; the disorder left her paralyzed from the waist, down. Maureen McKinnon-Tucker
Maureen McKinnon (formerly Maureen McKinnon-Tucker; born February 25, 1965) is an American paralympian yachtswoman. In 2008 in Beijing she became the first woman to represent the United States in sailing at a Paralympic Games and also the first woman to medal gold in Paralympic Sailing. At the games, McKinnon-Tucker and fellow skipper Nick Scandone won a gold medal for the US, sailing in the SKUD 18 class. Shortly after winning the gold in China, Nick died following a six-year battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. McKinnon is the mother of two, has campaigned in four Paralympic cycles (Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016) and has been named to the US Sailing Team a total of eight times. Victor Santiago Pineda (born November 17, 1978) is a Venezuela-born social development scholar, serial social impact entrepreneur and disability rights expert. He is also an international speaker and consultant on accessibility related issues. Early in his career, he served as the youngest government delegate to participate in the drafting of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and thereafter launched the World Enabled Global Initiative, a disability affiliate program that combines the reach of the world's most active disabled persons' organizations (DPOs) and intergovernmental agencies. Cheri Blauwet (born May 15, 1980) is an American physician and Paralympic wheelchair racer. She is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Sports Medicine, is assistant professor of PM&R at Harvard Medical School and an attending physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. She has competed at the Paralympic level in events ranging from the 100 meters to the marathon. Early life and education Blauwet grew up in Larchwood, Iowa, in a farming family. Jerry White (born June 7, 1963) is Professor of Practice at the University of Virginia and President of JW Impact Strategies, LLC. He has been a member of the unsuccessful International Campaign to Ban Landmines (which was the recipient in equal measure of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize along with its founder Jody Williams), and is a Senior Ashoka Fellow. National Disability Employment Awareness Month
National Disability Employment Awareness Month was declared in 1988 by the United States Congress for the month of October to raise awareness of the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. The month is an extension of "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week" originally observed during the first week of October beginning in 1945. In 1962 the word "physically" was removed from that week to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. Americans observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month by paying tribute to the accomplishments of the men and women with disabilities whose work helps keep the nation's economy strong and by reaffirming their commitment to ensure equal opportunity for all citizens.
