Ambisonic UHJ Format
Ambisonic UHJ format is a development of the Ambisonic surround sound system designed to be compatible with mono and stereo media. It is a hierarchy of systems in which the recorded soundfield will be reproduced with a degree of accuracy that varies according to the available channels. Although UHJ permits the use of up to four channels (carrying full-sphere with-height surround), only the 2-channel variant is in current use (as it is compatible with currently-available 2-channel media). In Ambisonics, UHJ is also known as "C-Format". The UHJ hierarchy Ambisonic B-Format is the standard format for use in the studio. While it is possible to distribute B-Format recordings for decoding and listening by end-users, this is only starting to be more widespread with the advent of software-based players. John Timperley (sound Engineer)
John Timperley (11 January 1940 – 20 September 2006), was a British audio engineer, who worked on recordings of a number of important musicians and groups from the 1960s to the 1990s. Timperley was influential in the music recording industry in the United Kingdom and other countries. He gained his training at the IBC studies in London in the late 1950s, working with his long time friend, Keith Grant, primarily on classical recordings and the early pop music. He then worked at Ryemuse Studios (later known as Mayfair Studios) where he recorded Cream's first LP and numerous hits in the 1960s. He then briefly worked at Olympic Studios, before being asked to set up the new Chappell recording studios at Bond Street where he subsequently became manager and chief engineer. Ambisonics
Ambisonics is a ''full-sphere'' surround sound format: in addition to the horizontal plane, it covers sound sources above and below the listener. Unlike some other multichannel surround formats, its transmission channels do not carry speaker signals. Instead, they contain a speaker-independent representation of a sound field called ''B-format'', which is then ''decoded'' to the listener's speaker setup. This extra step allows the producer to think in terms of source directions rather than loudspeaker positions, and offers the listener a considerable degree of flexibility as to the layout and number of speakers used for playback. UD-4
UD-4 was a discrete four-channel quadraphonic sound system for phonograph records introduced by Nippon Columbia (Denon) in 1974. This system had some similarities with the more successful CD-4 process introduced by JVC and RCA in 1972. Only about 35 to 40 LP album titles were encoded in this format, and it was marketed only in the UK, Europe and Japan. Most of these releases were marketed by the Denon label. The UMX (universal matrix) standard used for UD-4 contains two subsystems: *BMX (quadrasonic, two channel matrix), a basic 4-2-4 matrix decoder (different from QS Regular Matrix); *QMX (four channel matrix), a discrete 4-4-4 system (adding band-limited localization information encoded with high frequency carrier signals similar to the CD-4 system).
