Ambin Group
The Ambin group (''Groupe d'Ambin'' in French, ''Gruppo d'Ambin'' in Italian) is a sub-range of the Cottian Alps located on the French-Italian border. Geography Administratively the range is divided between the Italian ''provincia di Torino'' (southern slopes) and the French ''département de la Savoie'' (northern slopes). Borders The borders of Ambin group are (clockwise): * Etiache pass (west, it connects Ambin group with Pierre Menue group); * ruisseau d'Etache, ruisseau d'Ambin, Arc and ruisseau de la Fémaz (north); * Mont Cenis pass (east, it connects Ambin group with the Graian Alps); * torrente Rochemolles, Dora Riparia and Cenischia (south). Mont Cenis
Mont Cenis ( it, Moncenisio) is a massif (el. 3,612 m / 11,850 ft at Pointe de Ronce) and a pass (el. 2,085 m / 6,840 ft) in Savoie (France), which forms the limit between the Cottian and Graian Alps. Route The term "Mont Cenis" could derive from ''mont des cendres'' ("mountain of ashes"). According to tradition, following a forest fire, a great quantity of ashes accumulated on the ground, thus the name. The path of ashes was found during the building work of the route. The pass connects Val-Cenis in France in the northwest with Susa in Italy in the southeast. Thence the valley of the Dora Riparia is followed to Turin (103.8 km / 64.5 mi from Modane). Bardonecchia
Bardonecchia (; french: Bardonèche or ; pms, Bardonecia ; oc, Bardonescha ) is an Italian town and ''comune'' located in the Metropolitan City of Turin, in the Piedmont region, in the western part of Susa Valley. It grew out of a small village with the works for the Frejus Rail Tunnel, the first crossing the Alps. The town hosted the snowboarding events of the 2006 Winter Olympics. Mont Froid
The Mont Froid is a 2,822 m high mountain of the northern Cottian Alps. Geography The mountain is located in the French departement of Savoie (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), near the Italian border. It lies close to the main chain of the Alps, to which is connected by a brief ridge starting fom a 2,719 metres high minor summit. From there the main ridge follows eastwards with the Col de Sollières (2,639 m) and Signal du Petit Mont-Cenis, while southwards it continues with Col de Bellecombe (2,475 m) and Pointe de Bellecombe. The Pointe de Bellecombe is a 2,775 m high mountain of the northern Cottian Alps. Geography The mountain is located in the French departement of Savoie (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), near the Italian border. It belongs to the main chain of the Alps and stands on the water divide between the watersheds of the Dora Riparia (Po Valley) and of the Arc ( Rhone Valley). Punta Sommeiller
Punta Sommeiller (in Italian) or Pointe Sommeiller (in French) is a mountain of the Province of Turin, Italy and of Savoie, France. It lies in the Cottian Alps range. It has an elevation of above sea level. Etymology The old name of the mountain was ''Rognosa di Galambra'', which derived from the secondary valley of Galambra (a tributary of Dora Riparia). It was then renamed by the geologist Martino Baretti, author of the first documented ascent to the summit, in order to avoid confusions with two neighboring ''"Rognosa"''s, Rognosa d'Etiache and Rognosa del Sestriere.
