Ambika Satkunanathan is a human rights lawyer and human rights activist. She is also the former Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka. She also served in as the legal Consultant to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Sri Lanka. She is the Chairperson of the Neelan Tiruchelvam Trust. She has been a vocal critic of Prevention of Terrorism Act and has been also a vocal critic of the Sri Lankan authorities especially regarding the treatment of Tamils in Northern and Eastern provinces. She has also advocated for #MeToo movement in Sri Lanka. She has also been a strong vocal critic of the Rajapaksa family. 2022 Sri Lankan Protests
The 2022 Sri Lankan protests ( si, අරගලය, translit=Aragalaya, lit=Struggle), are mass protests that began in March 2022 against the government of Sri Lanka. The government has been criticized for mismanaging the Sri Lankan economy, which led to a subsequent economic crisis involving severe inflation, daily blackouts, a shortage of fuel, domestic gas, and other essential goods. The main demand of the protesters has been the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa and key officials from the Rajapaksa family. Despite the involvement of several opposition parties, most protesters have considered themselves to be apolitical, and some have expressed discontent with the parliamentary opposition. 2020 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 5 August 2020 to elect 225 members to Sri Lanka's 16th Parliament. 16,263,885 people were eligible to vote in the election, 31.95% of whom were young voters. The incumbent Sri Lanka People's Freedom Alliance coalition claimed a landslide victory in the election, winning 145 seats, while Samagi Jana Balawegaya won 54 seats, Tamil National Alliance won 10 seats and National People's Power won 3 seats. The main opposition United National Party suffered the worst showing in its history following a split over party leadership, finishing in fourth place with only one seat. The Tamil National Alliance ( ta, தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பு ISO 15919: ''tamiḻt tēciyakkūṭṭamaippu''; TNA) is a political alliance in Sri Lanka that represents the country's Sri Lankan Tamil minority.
