The ambassador of the United States of America to the Russian Federation is the ambassador, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary from the United States of America to the Russian Federation. Since September 4, 2022, Elizabeth Rood is serving as the ''Chargé d'affaires, chargée d'affaires ad interim'' after the previous incumbent, John J. Sullivan (diplomat), John J. Sullivan, stepped down from the role. Sullivan had been confirmed by the United States Senate confirmed on December 12, 2019. History The United States first established diplomatic relations with the Russian Empire in 1780. Diplomatic relations were broken off in 1917 when the Bolsheviks seized power, and they were not reestablished until 1933. From 1933 to 1991, the United States recognized the Soviet Union. Elizabeth Rood is an American diplomat who is the '' chargée d'affaires'' of the U.S. mission to Russia since 2022 and the nominee to serve as the United States ambassador to Turkmenistan. Early life and education Rood obtained an Master of Arts from the University of Maryland and an Bachelor of Arts from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. Career Rood joined the United States Foreign Service in 1993, after being a teacher in Frederick County, Maryland. Rood is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor. She currently serves as the deputy chief of mission at the United States Embassy in Moscow, Russia. As of September 4, 2022, Rood assumed duties as '' chargée d'affaires'' of the U.S. mission to Russia due to the retirement of Ambassador John Sullivan, until a permanent successor is appointed. Alexander Vershbow
Alexander Russell "Sandy" Vershbow (born July 3, 1952) is an American diplomat and former Deputy Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. From October 2005 to October 2008, he was the United States Ambassador to South Korea. Before that post he had been the ambassador to the Russian Federation from 2001 to 2005 and the ambassador to NATO from 1997 to 2001. For his work with NATO he was awarded the State Department's Distinguished Service Award. In March 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Vershbow as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, a position that holds responsibility for U.S. policy toward NATO, coordination of U.S. security and defense policies relating to the nations and international organizations of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
