Amanita Pachycolea
''Amanita pachycolea'', commonly known as the western grisette or the Stuntz's great ringless amanita, is a species of agaric fungus in the family Amanitaceae. The cap is brown, sometimes lighter near the margin. The gills are white with gray-brown edges, staining orange-brown in age. The stipe is white to brownish with a fibrillose or scaly surface. The base is enclosed by a thick, felty volva, which is white in youth, then yellow or brownish, sometimes becoming reddish in age. ''A. pachycolea'' was recognized as a distinct species by mycologist Daniel Elliot Stuntz, and published in 1982 by Harry Delbert Thiers. It is classified in ''Amanita'' section ''Vaginatae'', which includes species with conspicuous radial striations on the cap ( wide), inamyloid spores, and the absence of a ring on the stipe (10–25 cm long, 1–3 cm wide, tapering upward). Daniel Elliot Stuntz
Daniel Elliot Stuntz (March 15, 1909 - March 5, 1983) was often called "Bud" by his family and colleagues. When Stuntz was young, his immediate and extended family moved from Ohio to Seattle. He had a sister named Alice Stuntz Marionneaux, whom he frequently visited in the later years. Stuntz's father, Chauncey Richards Stuntz, who worked in the sugarcane business, would be absent to work for most of the time. In 1920s, he was promoted as the general manager of a sugar mill, 'Jobabo' in Oriente Province in Cuba. During his father's absence, Stuntz' mother, Evelyn Elliot Stuntz, managed the family and arranged the children's summer vacations. Education Stuntz was born in Milford, Ohio, United States. Before he went to college, he studied in Queen Anne High School, Seattle. In autumn 1931, he enrolled at the University of Washington and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1935. Amanita
The genus ''Amanita'' contains about 600 species of agarics, including some of the most toxic known mushrooms found worldwide, as well as some well-regarded edible species. This genus is responsible for approximately 95% of the fatalities resulting from mushroom poisoning, with the death cap accounting for about 50% on its own. The most potent toxin present in these mushrooms is α-Amanitin.
