Friedrich Carl Alwin Pockels
Friedrich Carl Alwin Pockels (18 June 1865 – 29 August 1913) was a German physicist. He was born in Italy to Captain Theodore Pockels and Alwine Becker. He obtained a doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1888, and from 1900 to 1913 he was professor of theoretical physics at the University of Heidelberg. In 1893 he discovered that a steady electric field applied to certain birefringent materials causes the refractive index to vary, approximately in proportion to the strength of the field. The coefficient of proportionality is of the order of to . This phenomenon is now called the Pockels effect. His sister Agnes Pockels (1862–1935) was a pioneer in chemistry. Patricio Aylwin Azócar (; 26 November 1918 – 19 April 2016) was a Chilean politician from the Christian Democratic Party, lawyer, author, professor and former senator. He was the first president of Chile after dictator Augusto Pinochet, and his election marked the Chilean transition to democracy in 1990. Despite resistance from elements of the Chilean military and government after his election, Aylwin was staunch in his support for the Chilean National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation which exposed the systematic brutalities of the dictatorship. Plot Alwin Schmieder, his younger brother August and his friend Otto are the only men in the village who have not yet joined the LPG (the German equivalent of the Agricultural Production Cooperative). August, who have some expertise in chickens the question does not arise either, because he is only a servant of his brother, from whom he receives food and lodging, but rarely a payment. Alwin has been a widower for a short time and now realizes that he can no longer cope with the household without his Amanda. ''The Notion Club Papers'' is an abandoned novel by J. R. R. Tolkien, written during 1945 and published posthumously in ''Sauron Defeated'', the 9th volume of ''The History of Middle-earth''. It is a time travel story, written while ''The Lord of the Rings'' was being developed. The Notion Club is a fictionalization of (and a play on words on the name of) Tolkien's own such club, the Inklings. Although unfinished, the text of ''The Notion Club Papers'' runs for some 120 pages in ''Sauron Defeated''. Embedded within the story are Tolkien's versions of European legends: ''King Sheave'', and '' The Death of St. Brendan'', a three-page poem also titled 'Imram'. Karl Alwin often Carl Alwin (formerly known as Alwin Oskar Pinkus; 15 April 1891 – 15 October 1945) was a German orchestra conductor. Biography Alwin was born in Königsberg. He studied philosophy, literature and music in Berlin alongside his friends Engelbert Humperdinck and Hugo Kaun. After his education, he worked from 1910 at the Berlin Court Opera and from 1912 in Bayreuth as an assistant. He then started his career as a conductor in 1913 in Halle (Saale), 1914 in Poznań, 1915–1917 in Düsseldorf and then until 1920 in Hamburg. From 1920 to 1938 he conducted at the Vienna State Opera until after the takeover by the Nazis due to a professional disqualification became unoccupied. Because of his Jewish origin, Alwin had to emigrate to the United States. Alwin Schultz
Alwin Schultz (6 August 1838 – 10 March 1909) was a German art historian and medievalist, professor of art history at the Charles University in Prague. Biography He was born at Muskau, Lusatia. He studied archaeology and Germanic philology at the University of Breslau (1858/59 and 1862–64), and in 1859–61 attended the Bauakademie in Berlin, where he also took drawing classes. In 1866 he became a docent for Christian archaeology and art history at Breslau, where in 1872 he was named an associate professor. In 1882 he was called to the University of Prague as a full professor. Among his publications are a treatise on the Minnesingers in two volumes (1889) and a discussion of Germany in the 14th and 15th centuries (1892) as well as a treatise on domestic life in Europe during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period (1903).
