Alves, Moray
Alves ( gd, An Àbhais or ') is a small agricultural village in Moray, Scotland. Geography The A96 runs east to west across Alves and connects the village to the nearest towns of Forres (to the west) and Elgin (to the east). The hamlets of Garrowslack and Hillside lie to the southeast and are made up of isolated farms and houses. Alves Wood to the west of the village is a large conifer plantation. While out walking in 1981, Andrew Bain, a carpenter from Aberdeen, discovered what looked like an ancient spiral ditch, 8 feet deep, 60 feet in diameter. This may be the only one of its kind in the world. The people who planted the trees on the ditch must have thought the ditch was landscaping recently done for the estate on which Alves Wood is situated, or perhaps an unfinished drainage system. Moray
Moray () gd, Moireibh or ') is one of the 32 local government council areas of Scotland. It lies in the north-east of the country, with a coastline on the Moray Firth, and borders the council areas of Aberdeenshire and Highland. Between 1975 and 1996 Moray, with similar boundaries, was a district of the then Grampian Region. Douglas Ross (Scottish Politician)
Douglas Gordon Ross (born 27 January 1983) is a Scottish politician who has served as Leader of the Scottish Conservative Party since 2020. He has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Moray since 2017. In addition to his seat in Westminster, he serves as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Highlands and Islands having been elected in 2021. He was previously MSP for the region from 2016 to 2017. Born in Aberdeen, Ross was educated at Forres Academy. After graduating from the Scottish Agricultural College, he worked on a dairy farm. A member of the Scottish Liberal Democrats in his youth, he switched to the Scottish Conservatives and began his political career as a Scottish Parliament researcher and then a councillor in Moray. Kenneth Mackessack
Kenneth Mackessack (24 October 1902 – 18 October 1982) was a Scottish first-class cricketer and British Army officer. Mackessack served with the Seaforth Highlanders from 1923 to 1948, during which he served in British India and in the Second World War, in which he was wounded during the Battle of El Alamein. He served the remainder of the war as a military attaché in Washington, for which he was appointed to the Legion of Merit. During his military career he also played first-class cricket for the British Army cricket team, as well as for teams in British India. Following his retirement from the military, Mackessack served as the deputy lieutenant for Moray in 1954. Glen Grant Distillery
Glen Grant is a distillery founded in 1840 in Rothes, Speyside, that produces single malt Scotch whisky. Previously owned by ''Chivas Brothers Ltd'', best known for their Chivas Regal blended scotch whisky, Glen Grant was purchased by the Italian company Campari Group in December 2005. It is the biggest selling single malt Scotch whisky in Italy. Douglas Mackessack
Douglas Mackessack (7 August, 1903 — 28 October, 1987) was a Scottish first-class cricketer, British Army officer, and whiskey distiller. The son of George Ross Mackessack, he was born at Alves in the County of Moray in August 1903. He was educated in England at Rugby School, before matriculating to University College, Oxford. At Oxford he was a member of the Oxford University Cricket Club, playing for the club in the freshman match, but did not impress sufficiently to be selected for the first eleven. Playing his club cricket for Grange Cricket Club, Mackessack made a single appearance in first-class cricket for Scotland against Ireland at Dublin in 1927. Batting twice in the match, he was dismissed for 13 runs in the Scotland first innings by Thomas Dixon, while in their second innings he was dismissed by the same bowler for 14 runs. RAF Kinloss
Royal Air Force Kinloss or RAF Kinloss is a former Royal Air Force (RAF) station located near the village of Kinloss, on the Moray Firth in the north east of Scotland. The RAF station opened on 1 April 1939 and served as a training establishment during the Second World War. After the war it was handed over to Coastal Command to monitor Soviet ships and submarines in the Norwegian Sea. Until 2010 it was the main base for the RAF's fleet of Nimrod MR2 maritime patrol aircraft. It was intended that the MR2 would be replaced by the Nimrod MRA4, but the MRA4 was cancelled in the Strategic Defence and Security Review of October 2010. As a result, Kinloss became surplus to RAF requirements and regular flying operations ceased on 31 July 2011. Gordonstoun School
Gordonstoun School is a co-educational independent school for boarding and day pupils in Moray, Scotland. It is named after the estate owned by Sir Robert Gordon in the 17th century; the school now uses this estate as its campus. It is located in Duffus to the north-west of Elgin.
