The Alva Independent School District is a school district based in Alva, Oklahoma United States. Facilities Awards In 2016 Washington Early Childcare Center was recognized with a national award by Let's Move Active Schools, part of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative. The school was recognized for their 'outstanding efforts in creating an Active School environment'. To qualify for the award, schools must commit to providing students with at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, and met benchmarks set by the program including; physical activity during school, physical education, physical activity before and after school, family and community engagement. Alva, Oklahoma
Alva is a city in and the county seat of Woods County, Oklahoma, United States, along the Salt Fork Arkansas River. The population was 4,945 at the 2010 census. Northwestern Oklahoma State University is located in Alva. History Alva was established in 1893 as a General Land Office for the Cherokee Outlet land run, the largest of the land rushes that settled western and central Oklahoma. The site was chosen for its location on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and likely named for a railroad attorney, Alva Adams, who had become governor of Colorado. When the Southern Kansas Railway, began extending its line from Kiowa, Kansas across the Cherokee Outlet in 1886, Alva became the first railroad station southwest of Kiowa. Let's Move! is a public health campaign in the United States led by First Lady Michelle Obama. The campaign aimed to reduce childhood obesity and encourage a healthy lifestyle in children. The initiative had the initially stated goal of "solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation so that children born today will reach adulthood at a healthy weight". Let's Move! sought to decrease childhood obesity to 5% by 2030. Despite its goal, the Let's Move! initiative did not cause a decline in obesity rates. In 2008, 68% of Americans were either overweight or obese. By 2016, that number jumped to 71.2%. In 2018, more than 73.1% of Americans were either overweight or obese with African-American women leading the nation in obesity rates.
