Alun Davies (politician)
Thomas Alun Rhys Davies (born 12 February 1964) is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative party politician serving as the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Blaenau Gwent since 2011, and formerly Mid and West Wales from 2007 to 2011. He has served in several Welsh government offices, including Cabinet Secretary for Local Government and Public Services, Minister for Lifelong Learning and Welsh Language, and Minister for Natural Resources and Food. Davies previously worked as a public affairs consultant, and began his political career in Plaid Cymru before joining Welsh Labour. He was sacked from his Cabinet role in 2014 for pressuring civil servants to reveal private information about opposition Members, shortly after facing calls to resign after an investigation determined he had breached the Ministerial Code on a separate issue. Alun Davies (guitarist)
Alun Davies (born 21 July 1942) is a Welsh guitarist, studio musician, recording artist, and composer who rose to fame primarily with his supporting guitar work and backing vocals as accompanist for English musician Cat Stevens, from early 1970 to 1977. Prior to his association with Stevens, Davies co-wrote, sang, and played on two albums: in 1963, with Jon Mark, (known then as John Michael Burchell) and in 1968, as a member of the band Sweet Thursday with Mark, keyboardist Nicky Hopkins, Harvey Burns and Brian Odgers, when folk-rock music was still in its infancy. When their label declared bankruptcy, Davies was invited to join Cat Stevens as a session musician, who was attempting to change his sound and advance in the music world. Davies' experience, similar tastes in the emerging folk-rock genre, and capabilities with guitar and voice placed him in a pivotal role in Stevens' career, resulting in hit songs and a string of RIAA platinum certified breakthrough albums. Alun Talfan Davies
Sir Alun Talfan Davies (22 July 1913 – 11 November 2000) was a Welsh judge, publisher and Liberal politician. Background Alun Talfan Davies was born at Gorseinon near Swansea, the youngest son of the Calvinistic Methodist minister William Talfan Davies (1873–1938) and his wife Alys, née Jones (1878–1948). He was the brother of Aneirin Talfan Davies. He was educated at Gowerton grammar school. He read law at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1942, he married Eiluned Christopher Williams. He had one son and three daughters. In 1969 his daughter Janet married the Welsh Rugby international Barry John. He died at his home in Penarth on 1 November 2000. Legal career Davies entered Gray's Inn and qualified as a barrister just before the outbreak of World War II. Alun-Wyn Davies is a Welsh rugby union player who was previously a prop for Coventry R.F.C. As of January 2011 he now plays hooker for Llandovery R.F.C. Alun Davies (historian)
Alun Davies (1916 – 20 March 1980) was a Welsh historian. His parents were Welsh Independent minister Rev. Ben Davies (1878-1958), and his wife, Sarah, who lived in the Llandysul area of Cardiganshire. After completing his secondary education in Llandysul he took up a place at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth graduating in history in 1937. He then went on to study for an MA at the Sorbonne under Georges Lefebvre. He was still studying at the Cité Universitaire in 1940 when Paris was invaded by the German army. He immediately returned to the UK and joined the army as a military interpreter. A posting in Burma saw him promoted in the 14th Army in Burma to Intelligence Officer, firstly a captain then a major, and him participating in the reconquest of Burma. Alun Radcliffe Davies (6 May 1923 – 8 June 2003) was a Welsh Anglican priest in the last third of the twentieth century. Davies was born on 6 May 1923 into an ecclesiastical family: his father was the Revd Canon Rhys Hughes Davies. He was educated at Cowbridge Grammar School, University College, Cardiff, Keble College, Oxford and St. Michael's College, Llandaff. After a curacy in Roath he was a Lecturer at St. Michael's College, Llandaff then Domestic Chaplain to the Archbishop of Wales. He was a Chaplain in the RNR until 1960 when he became Vicar of Ystrad Mynach. Alun Herbert Davies
Alun Herbert Davies (1927-2005), known as Alan Creunant in Wales, was a Welsh head teacher, and first director of the Welsh Books Council. His parents were Rev. Thomas Herbert (Creunant) Davies and Hannah Davies (née Thomas). On completing his secondary education in Llandovery he studied at Trinity College, Carmarthen, but did not enter the teaching profession until he had completed two years military service. Following a short period teaching in the Tregaron area, he moved to Llangeitho where, in 1952, he took up the position of school head teacher. From 1965 to 1987 he held the position of Director of the Welsh Books Council. During this time he secured significant funding for the institution from local authorities and the Welsh Arts Council, and developed trading practices, introducing a wholesale operation for booksellers and publishers, and introducing services to help publishers improve standards of book production.
