Alum Creek, Texas
Alum Creek is an unincorporated community in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 70 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Alum Creek was founded in 1829, one of the oldest communities in the county. Members of the Cottle, Highsmith, Craft, Parker, Grimes, Ridgeway, and White families (from Stephen F. Austin's lower colonies) built a fort for protection against Native Americans near the mouth of the community's namesake creek. With the families locating cabins and farms nearby, the town expanded enough to have the land deeded for a campground and meetinghouse in 1846. James Craft previously owned the latter. A post office was established at Alum Creek in 1851 and remained in operation until 1898. By 1853, a local Methodist Episcopal church had been formed. The ''Handbook of Texas'' is a comprehensive encyclopedia of Texas geography, history, and historical persons published by the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA). Smithville Independent School District
Smithville Independent School District is a public school district based in Smithville, Texas (USA). Located in Bastrop County, in which it serves Smithville and Rosanky, a small portion of the district extends into Fayette County. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. Smithville ISD is in the service area of Austin Community College. State Highway 71 (SH 71) is a Texas state highway that runs . The northern terminus is at US 87 and US 377 south of Brady and its southern terminus is at SH 35 near Blessing. This highway is designated the "10th Mountain Division Highway" from SH 95 to Interstate 35. History SH 71 was originally designated on August 21, 1923 from Austin to Columbus, replacing SH 3D and the western half of SH 3A. On June 8, 1925, SH 71 was extended to Midfield, though this was not effective until 1926. On March 19, 1928, it extended south to its current end. Bastrop, Texas
Bastrop () is a city and the county seat of Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,688 according to the 2020 census. It is located about southeast of Austin and is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Spanish soldiers lived temporarily at the current site of Bastrop as early as 1804, when a fort was established where the Old San Antonio Road crossed the Colorado River and named ''Puesta del Colorado''. Bastrop's namesake, Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop, was a commoner named Philip Hendrik Nering Bogel, who was wanted for embezzlement in his native country of the Netherlands.
