Altona Treatment Plant
The Altona Treatment Plant of City West Water is a small sewage treatment plant in Altona, Victoria, approximately 16 km west of Melbourne, Australia. Located on Queen Street between Laverton Creek and Altona Meadows, it services over 20,000 residential and business properties in the Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton and Point Cook areas and treats close to 13 million litres of sewage a day. Background The original Altona Sewage Treatment Plant was constructed in the 1960s to provide sewage treatment services to the Altona area. City West Water
City West Water Corporation was a Government of Victoria retail water corporation that provided drinking water, sewerage, trade waste and recycled water services in the Melbourne central business district, inner and western suburbs. The service area included the local government areas of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne (north of the Yarra River), Moonee Valley, Wyndham, Yarra and parts of Melton and Hume. The water distributed by City West Water was supplied by Melbourne Water and primarily sourced from Melbourne Water's water supply catchments in the upper reaches of the Yarra River and the Thomson River, as well as the Victorian Desalination Plant. Water management in Victoria deals with the management of water resources in and by the Australian State of Victoria. History Waterworks trusts Following droughts in the 1870s, the ''Water Conservation and Distribution Act 1881'' was passed to help establish local waterworks trusts. It allowed local trusts to borrow funds from the government for the construction of water supply works. The trusts could then charge water rates to users in order to recoup their costs and pay the interest on the loans. In 1887, the ''Mildura Irrigation Company'' was established as a privately owned water supply company in Mildura.
