Alternate Line Service
Alternate Line service is a GSM feature for supporting two different phone numbers for voice service on the same mobile device. The Alternate Line Service (ALS) was introduced as additional service with the former "PCS-1800" (now better known as GSM1800) standard, in a specification called CPHS. This is the reason that GSM900 singleband phones do not support this feature, while the corresponding GSM1800 version often does (e.g. Ericsson GH-337 vs. PH-337). Later it became part of the GSM-Specs and was adapted even by some traditional GSM900 providers, e.g. A1(AT)and orange also in AT. This service does not work currently with Android devices. Global System For Mobile Communications
The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is a standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe the protocols for second-generation ( 2G) digital cellular networks used by mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets. GSM is also a trade mark owned by the GSM Association. GSM may also refer to the Full Rate voice codec. It was first implemented in Finland in December 1991. By the mid-2010s, it became a global standard for mobile communications achieving over 90% market share, and operating in over 193 countries and territories. 2G networks developed as a replacement for first generation ( 1G) analog cellular networks. Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open-source software, designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Android is developed by a consortium of developers known as the Open Handset Alliance and commercially sponsored by Google. It was unveiled in November 2007, with the first commercial Android device, the HTC Dream, being launched in September 2008. Most versions of Android are proprietary. A ringtone, ring tone or ring is the sound made by a telephone to indicate an incoming call. Originally referring to and made by the electromechanical striking of bells, the term now refers to any sound on any device alerting of a new incoming call—up to and including recordings of original telephone bells. Electronic telephones, especially smartphones, are manufactured with a preloaded selection of ringtones. Customers can buy or generate custom ringtones for installation on the device.
