KTAV Publishing House is a publishing house located in Brooklyn, New York. Ktav means "to write" in Hebrew. Founded in 1921, it has been among the most notable publishers of Judaica and Jewish educational texts since the middle of the 20th century. Boris Alterman ( he, בוריס אלתרמן, russian: Борис Альтерман; born May 4, 1970) is an Israeli chess Grandmaster, FIDE Senior Trainer (2010), advisor of the Junior chess program. He started playing chess at the age of 7. His career highlights include earning the IM title in 1991, and the GM title in 1992. He is the winner of the following Open and GM tournaments: Haifa 1993, Bad Homburg 1996, Rishon LeZion 1996, Beijing 1995 and 1997, and Munich 1992. He plays for Rishon LeZion chess club. Eric Alterman (born January 14, 1960) is an American historian, journalist, author, media critic, blogger, and educator. He is a CUNY Distinguished Professor of English and Journalism at Brooklyn College and the author of eleven books. From 1995 to 2020, Alterman was "The Liberal Media" columnist for ''The Nation''. Ira Alterman (4 July 1945 – 6 July 2015) was an American journalist and author, particularly of illustrated novelty books. Ira Alterman was born on 4 July 1945. Meyer Alterman (March 28, 1891 – December 30, 1967) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was born on March 28, 1891, in New York City. He attended Public School No. 39 and DeWitt Clinton High School. He was admitted to the bar in 1914, and practiced law in New York City. During World War I he served in the U.S. Army. Alterman was a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 17th D.) in 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936 and 1937; and was Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means in 1935. Nathan Alterman ( he, נתן אלתרמן, August 14, 1910 – March 28, 1970) was an Israeli poet, playwright, journalist, and translator. Though never holding any elected office, Alterman was highly influential in Socialist Zionist politics, both before and after the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948. Biography Nathan Alterman was born in Warsaw, Poland (then part of the Russian Empire). In 1925, when he was 15 years old, the family moved to Tel Aviv and he continued his studies at the Herzliya Hebrew High School. When he was 19 years old, he travelled to Paris to study at the University of Paris (a.k.a. La Sorbonne), but a year later he decided to go to Nancy to study agronomy.
