Alteration Of Sex Description And Sex Status Act
The Alteration of Sex Description and Sex Status Act, 2003 (Act No. 49 of 2003) is a South African Act of Parliament which allows a person to change, under certain conditions, their sex recorded in the population registry. Under the act, three types of people may apply to the Department of Home Affairs for a change of the sex description in their birth record: people who have undergone surgical or medical sex reassignment, people whose sexual characteristics have evolved naturally, and intersex people. The applicant must submit medical reports describing their situation; in the case of intersex people they must also submit a psychological report stating that they have lived for two years with their chosen gender identity. If the application is refused, it may be appealed to the Minister of Home Affairs, and if the appeal is refused the decision may be challenged in the Magistrate's Court. A transgender (often abbreviated as trans) person is someone whose gender identity or gender expression does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth. Many transgender people experience dysphoria, which they seek to alleviate through transitioning, often adopting a different name and set of pronouns in the process. Additionally, they may undergo sex reassignment therapies such as hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery to more closely align their primary and secondary sex characteristics with their gender identity. The National Assembly is the directly elected house of the Parliament of South Africa, located in Cape Town, Western Cape. It consists of four hundred members who are elected every five years using a party-list proportional representation system where half of the members are elected proportionally from nine provincial lists and the remaining half from national lists so as to restore proportionality. The National Action (more commonly known by its Afrikaans name, ''Nasionale Aksie'') was a short-lived South African political party formed by Cassie Aucamp when he left the Afrikaner Eenheidsbeweging (AEB) in the 2003 floor-crossing window. Sex reassignment therapy or medical transition is the medical aspect of gender transition, that is, modifying one's sex characteristics to better suit one's gender identity. It can consist of hormone therapy to alter secondary sex characteristics, sex reassignment surgery to alter primary sex characteristics, and other procedures altering appearance, such as permanent hair removal for trans women. In appropriately evaluated cases of severe gender dysphoria, sex reassignment therapy is often the best when standards of care are followed. Prince Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi (born 27 August 1928) is a South African politician and Zulu traditional leader who is currently a Member of Parliament and the traditional prime minister to the Zulu royal family. He was Chief Minister of the KwaZulu bantustan during apartheid and founded the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in 1975. He also served as Minister of Home Affairs from 1994 to 2004.
