Altendorf, Schwyz
Altendorf is a municipality in March District in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland. History Altendorf is first mentioned in 972 as ''Rahprehteswilare''. In 1932, construction started on the '' Etzelwerk'', a hydro-electric power station to generate power for the Swiss Federal Railways. By 1937, the power station was complete and in operation. The plant continues in use today, and takes its water supply from the Sihlsee reservoir that lies to the south-west. Geography Altendorf has an area, , of . Of this area, 52.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 37.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 9.4% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.4%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains). The municipality is located on the ''Obersee'' section of Lake Zurich. It is along the rail line Pfäffikon- Lachen and on the A3 motorway. Altendorf is a community in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany. Geography Altendorf lies in the Oberfranken-West (Upper Franconia West) Region. Constituent communities The namesake centre of Altendorf has 1,544 inhabitants while the outlying amalgamated centre of Seußling (or Seussling) has 542 (as of 1 January 2003). The community also has two traditional rural land units, known in German as ''Gemarkungen'', also named Altendorf and Seußling (it is traditional for a ''Gemarkung'' to be named after a town or village lying nearby). History Before Secularization, Altendorf belonged to the High Monastery at Bamberg. Since the ''Reichsdeputationshauptschluss'' of 1803, the community has belonged to Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, today's community came into being under the ''Gemeindeedikt'' (“Community Edict”) of 1818. Many finds from Celtic times point to early settlement. Altendorf (megalithic Tomb)
The Altendorf tomb (german: Steinkammergrab von Altendorf) was an important megalithic tomb at Altenburg near Naumburg, northern Hesse, Germany. It was a gallery grave belonging to the Late Neolithic Wartberg culture. The Altenburg tomb is of special significance in Central European prehistory because of the large number of individuals it contained. Dates The tomb belongs to the Hessian-Westphalian stone cist group ('Hessisch-Westfälische Steinkistengruppe'), which is part of the Wartberg culture. It dates to the 3,400 BC or later and is normally assumed to be one of the earliest such monuments in the region. Discovery and excavation The tomb was discovered accidentally, probably through agricultural activity, at some point in the early 20th century. Several small unprofessional attempts at digging appear to have been made until 1926.
