Altadena
Altadena () ("Alta", Spanish for "Upper", and "dena" from Pasadena) is an unincorporated area and census-designated place in the Verdugo Mountains region of Los Angeles County, California, approximately 14 miles (23 km) from the downtown Los Angeles Civic Center, and directly north of the city of Pasadena, California. The population was 42,777 at the 2010 census, up from 42,610 at the 2000 census. Etymology The name Altadena derives from the Spanish ''alta'', meaning "upper", and ''dena'' from Pasadena; the area is adjacent to, but at a higher elevation than, Pasadena.Manning, Mike. The word Altadena was first used by Byron Clark, who coined it for his nursery located south of present-day Woodbury on the west side of town. Christmas Tree Lane
Christmas Tree Lane (Italian: ''Via dell'Albero di Natale'') is a boulevard of deodar cedar trees in Altadena, California. The trees on the Lane, Santa Rosa Avenue, have been lighted annually as a Christmas Holiday display since 1920. The association that runs it claims it is "the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas display in the world". Christmas Tree Lane was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1990, the same year it was also designated as California Historical Landmark No. 990. Eaton Canyon
Eaton Canyon is a major canyon beginning at the Eaton Saddle near Mount Markham and San Gabriel Peak in the San Gabriel Mountains in the Angeles National Forest, United States. Its drainage flows into the Rio Hondo river and then into the Los Angeles River. It is named after Judge Benjamin S. Eaton, who lived in the Fair Oaks Ranch House in 1865 not far from Eaton Creek. The most well-known portion of the canyon is the Eaton Canyon Nature Center in Pasadena, California. The trailhead of the Mount Wilson Toll Road is in the canyon. History Eaton Canyon is in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Originally called "El Precipicio" by the Spanish settlers because of its steep gorges, the canyon falls under several governmental jurisdictions. The Arroyo Seco, meaning "dry stream" in Spanish, is a U.S. Geological Survey. Fair Oaks Avenue (Pasadena, California)
Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena, California, is a major north–south road connecting the communities of Altadena, Pasadena, and South Pasadena, running in length. It starts at its southernmost end in South Pasadena at Huntington Drive. It travels due north to a terminus above Loma Alta Avenue in Altadena and the gates of Angelus County Park. Beyond this, the road becomes a private easement. At its meeting of Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena the two roads become the zero-zero, east–west, north–south postal division of Pasadena which carries on into Altadena. Andrew McNally (1836–1904) was an American publisher and co-founder of the company Rand McNally. Early life On March 4, 1836, McNally was born in Armagh, Ireland. Career A printer by trade, he moved to Chicago in 1858 and got a job in a print shop owned by William H. Rand at a wage of $9 per week. In 1873, McNally and William H. Rand incorporated Rand, McNally & Co. With William H. Rand as President and McNally as Vice President. Rand, McNally & Co. becoming one of the largest and best-known map publishers in history. In 1888, McNally purchased 2,300 acres of Southern California land known as Rancho Los Coyotes from the Abel Stearns Rancho Trust. The Verdugo Mountains, also known as the Verdugo Hills or simply The Verdugos, are a small, rugged mountain range of the Transverse Ranges system in Los Angeles County, California. Rancho San Pascual
Rancho San Pascual also known as Rancho el Rincón de San Pascual was a Mexican land grant in present-day Los Angeles County, California given to Juan Marine in 1834 by José Figueroa. Rancho San Pascual land now includes the cities of Pasadena, South Pasadena, and portions of San Marino, and the unincorporated communities of Altadena and San Pasqual. History After the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was secularized in 1834, the rancho was granted by Governor Figueroa to Juan Mariné, a retired artillery lieutenant. Juan Marine's wife Maria Antonia Sepulveda had died in 1831, and Marine married the widow Eulalia Pérez de Guillén Mariné. John Strother Griffin
John Strother Griffin (1816–1898) was a surgeon attached to the General Stephen W. Kearney expedition from New Mexico to California, a landowner and founder of East Los Angeles and a member of the Common Council of the city of Los Angeles, where he was one of the first university-trained physicians to settle. Family John Strother Griffin was born in Fincastle, Virginia, on June 25, 1816, to John Caswell Griffin and Mary Talbot Hancock, both of Virginia. He had five siblings, George Hancock, William Preston, Julia Elizabeth, Caroline Margaret and Elizabeth Croghan.
