Alta Allen
Alta Allen (born Alta Crowin) (September 6, 1904 – July 24, 1998) was an American actress. Early years Allen was born as Alta Crowin in Oakland, California in 1904 to a Scottish mother, Jessie (née Robertson), and W. J. Crowin, who hailed from the West Coast. She made her first professional performance at an Oakland theater in a production of Louisa May Alcott's ''Little Women''. Allen's role in this production was as Beth March. She was ten years old at the time. Allen was "one of the most popular of Oakland's younger social set." Career Allen's early professional experience included acting in stock theater in Oakland and directing and performing in the Fairmont's ''Rainbow Lane'' revue. ''Be My Wife'' is a 1921 American silent comedy film written, directed, and starring Max Linder. Plot As described in a film magazine, Max (Linder) is seeking the hand of Mary (Allen), but he has a rival and her Aunt Agatha (Rankin) objects to him. He disguises himself as a music teacher, but a dog "Pal" discovers him. Max falls over a fence and becomes unconscious. He dreams that he is married but cannot shake the aunt. There is a wife who suspects her husband of flirting and retaliates by picking a few lovers herself. Just as the marital difficulties are settled, Max wakes up. He then attempts to win over his sweetheart by impersonating a burglar in a terrific struggle with himself in an adjoining room while Mary, his rival, and Aunt Agatha listen to the fight. ''Seven Years Bad Luck'' is a 1921 American comedy film written and directed by, and starring Max Linder. A man about to be married becomes fearful of bad luck when he breaks a mirror. Plot Max Linder returns home drunk after his bachelor party. The next morning, he is awakened by a loud noise. His valet John, while chasing his pretty maid, has broken his mirror. John claims Mary, the maid, dropped a napkin. By the time Max drags himself out of bed, Mary has cleared away the broken glass and John has gotten Max's chef to dress just like their employer. Then, when Max looks into the non-existent glass, the chef mimics his every action. Max finally realizes he is being tricked, but while he is in the other room, John sneaks in a repairman to fix the mirror. Thus when Max flings something at what he thinks is an imposter, he breaks the mirror himself, much to his surprise.
