Alraune (1930 Film)
''Alraune'' is a German science fiction Horror film directed by Richard Oswald. Like the Alraune (1928 film), 1928 version this movie again features Brigitte Helm in the role of Alraune. This version aimed for greater realism but is still based upon the Alraune, original German myth. Plot A scientist, Professor Jakob ten Brinken, interested in the laws of heredity, impregnates a prostitute in a laboratory with the semen of a hanged murderer. The prostitute conceives a female child who has no concept of love, whom the professor adopts. The girl, Alraune, suffers from obsessive sexuality and perverse relationships throughout her life. She learns of her unnatural origins and she avenges herself against the professor. Cast Release ''Alraune'' was first shown in Germany at the Gloria-Palast theatre on 2 December 1930. Richard Oswald
Richard Oswald (5 November 1880 – 11 September 1963) was an Austrian film director, producer, screenwriter, and father of German-American film director Gerd Oswald. Early career Richard Oswald, born in Vienna as Richard W. Ornstein, began his career as an actor on the Viennese stage. He made his film directorial debut at age 34 with ''The Iron Cross'' (1914) and worked a number of times for Jules Greenbaum. In 1916, Oswald set up his own production company in Germany, writing and directing most of his films himself. His pre-1920 efforts include such literary adaptations as ''The Picture of Dorian Gray'' (1917), '' Peer Gynt'' (1919), the once scandalous ''Different from the Others'' (1919) and ''Around the World in Eighty Days'' (1919). Oswald directed nearly 100 films. Ivan Koval-Samborsky
Ivan Koval-Samborsky ( Ukrainian: Іван Коваль-Самборський; 16 September 1893 – 10 January 1962) was a Ukrainian stage and film actor. After establishing himself in the Soviet film industry in the 1920s, he briefly went to work in Germany during the late 1920s before returning to Russia following the arrival of sound. In 1938 he was arrested by the Soviet authorities leading to his most recent film, the anti-Nazi '' The Swamp Soldiers'', having to be reshot to minimize his role.Gershenson p.20 He didn't appear in another film until 1957. Elsa Bassermann (born Elsa Sarah Schiff; January 14, 1878 – May 30, 1961) was a German screenwriter, stage and film actress. She was married to Albert Bassermann and often acted with him.
