Alpujarra de la Sierra is a municipality located in the province of Granada, Spain. According to the 2007 census (INE), the city has a population of 1168 inhabitants. History It was formed by the union in 1971 of Mecina Bombarón and Yegen, and is situated in the central-northern area of La Alpujarra ( Granada), 108 km from the provincial capital, in the south-east of Spain. It is bounded by the municipalities of Lanteira, Válor, Ugíjar, Cádiar and Bérchules. Its council was formed from the centres of Mecina Bombarón, Yegen and Golco, together with the cortijada (hamlet/farmstead) of Montenegro, Spain. The municipality lies on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the houses look out towards the mediterranean sea in the distance. Gerald Brenan
Edward FitzGerald "Gerald" Brenan, CBE, MC (7 April 1894 – 19 January 1987) was a British writer and hispanist who spent much of his life in Spain. Brenan is best known for '' The Spanish Labyrinth'', a historical work on the background to the Spanish Civil War, and for '' South from Granada: Seven Years in an Andalusian Village''. Bérchules
Bérchules is a village and municipality in the central Alpujarra, in the province of Granada in Spain. The origins of the village are Arab. There are two villages in the municipality, Bérchules (36° 58' north and 3° 11' east, elevation 1350 metres), and Alcútar (36° 58' north and 3° 11' east, elevation 1250 metres). The villages are on the road, Órgiva-Trevélez-Ugíjar, and their population is estimated at 900 and 300 respectively. The river Grande de Los Bérchules flows past the village on its course from the Sierra Nevada to the Mediterranean at Motril. En route it becomes renamed Rio "Gualdalfeo" and is the main river in the Alpujarra. Válor is a municipality located in the province of Granada, Spain. According to the 2005 census (INE), the town (pueblo) has a population of 736 inhabitants. It is famous for its yearly Moors and Christians performance held on 15 September as part of the festival to the patron saint, the Holy Christ of the Ivy (Santo Cristo de la Yedra) an impressive statue of Christ on His Cross brought out in procession through the pueblo on 14 September. Alpujarra
The Alpujarra (, Arabic: ''al-bussarat'') is a natural and historical region in Andalusia, Spain, on the south slopes of the Sierra Nevada and the adjacent valley. The average elevation is above sea level. It extends over two provinces, Granada and Almería; it is sometimes referred to in the plural as "Las Alpujarras".
