Alpine Skiing At The 1992 Winter Olympics
Alpine Skiing at the 1992 Winter Olympics at Albertville, France, consisted of ten alpine skiing events, held 9–22 February. The men's races were held at Val d’Isère, except for the slalom, which was at Les Menuires. All five women's events were conducted at Méribel. Medal summary Twelve nations won medals in Alpine skiing, with Austria leading the medal table with eight (3 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze). Petra Kronberger of Austria led the individual medal table with two gold medals, while Alberto Tomba of Italy was the most successful male skier with two medals, one gold and one silver. Marc Girardelli's two silver medals were the first won for Luxembourg in the Winter Olympics, and made him its most successful Olympic athlete to date. Annelise Coberger's silver medal in the women's slalom was New Zealand's first, and through 2014, only Winter Olympic medal. Kerrin Anne Lee-Gartner (born September 21, 1966) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medallist from Canada. Born in Trail, British Columbia, she grew up in Rossland and raced as a youngster at Red Mountain. Lee-Gartner started skiing for the Canadian Women's Ski Team in 1982, but suffered a number of knee operations over the years including two complete reconstructions. She attained her first World Cup podium early in December 1990, then had five more top-six finishes early in the 1992 season entering the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. On the ''Roc de Fer'' course at Méribel, Lee-Gartner won the gold medal in the Olympic downhill. Günther Mader (born 24 June 1964) is a former alpine ski racer and Olympic medalist from Austria. Born in Matrei am Brenner, Tyrol, he is one of only five men to have won World Cup races in all five alpine disciplines (downhill, super G, giant slalom, slalom, and combined). Career Mader made his World Cup debut at age 18 and competed for 16 seasons, including four Winter Olympics and seven world championships. He was the bronze medalist in the downhill at the 1992 Olympics and won a total of six medals in the world championships. Franck Piccard (born 17 September 1965) is a French former Alpine skier. A native of Les Saisies, Piccard won a total of four Alpine skiing World Cup races.
