The women's giant slalom competition of the Sochi 2014 Olympics was held at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort near Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, on Tuesday, 18 February. Summary The race was won by Tina Maze of Slovenia, who won silver in 2010 at Vancouver. This was her second Olympic gold in Sochi, following the gold in downhill, and fourth career Olympic medal. The silver was won by Anna Fenninger of Austria, and the defending Olympic champion, Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany, was third. Elisabeth Görgl, who won bronze in Vancouver, finished 11th. Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort
The Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort ( rus, Ро́за Ху́тор, r=Roza Khutor, p=ˈrozə ˈxutər) is an alpine ski resort in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, located at the Aibga Ridge of the Western Caucasus along the Roza Khutor plateau near Krasnaya Polyana. Constructed from 2003 to 2011, it hosted the alpine skiing events for the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, based in nearby Sochi. The resort is east of the Black Sea at Sochi; the majority of the slopes at Rosa Khutor face northeast, with the backside slopes facing southwest. Tanja Tuulia Poutiainen (born 6 April 1980) is a retired World Cup alpine ski racer from Finland. She specialized in the technical events of slalom and giant slalom, and was the silver medalist in the women's giant slalom at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. Born in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Poutiainen started skiing at the age of three. She became junior world champion in slalom in 1997 at Schladming, Austria, and also took bronze in the super-G; she made her World Cup debut that March at Vail in the United States. At the 1999 Junior World Championships, she placed third in the giant slalom at Pra-Loup, France. Michaela Kirchgasser (born 18 March 1985) is a retired Austrian alpine ski racer. She raced in the technical events of slalom and giant slalom, and also the combined. Career On 25 November 2006, Kirchgasser made her first World Cup podium with a third place in the giant slalom at Aspen, Colorado. Her first victory was on 24 February 2007, in a giant slalom at Sierra Nevada, Spain. She has competed in three Olympics and six World Championships. Dominique Gisin (; born 4 June 1985) is a retired World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist from Switzerland. She is the older sister of alpine ski racers Marc and Michelle Gisin. Career Born in Visp in the canton of Valais, Gisin made her World Cup debut in December 2005. Her first podium was in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, where she placed second in the downhill on 13 January 2007. Anémone Marmottan (born 25 May 1988) is a French World Cup alpine ski racer and soldier. Born in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Savoie, Marmottan won a gold medal in the team event at the 2011 World Championships, and the next day finished 14th in the giant slalom. Career Marmottan began skiing at age two with her family in her hometown of Savine, and joined the local ski club in her area, where she got her first taste for competing.
