Alpine High School is a public high school located in the city of Alpine, Texas (USA) and is classified as a 3A school by the UIL. It is a part of the Alpine Independent School District located in north-central Brewster County. In 2015, the school was rated " Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency. History In 1994 the school had 350 students. Prior to 1996 Alpine High School served as the high school for students from Terlingua Common School District. Beginning in the 1960s, students were bussed to Alpine, with the bus ride being the longest in the United States, with of distance each way, totaling about one hour and 55 minutes. A trip to and from Alpine High totaled . In 1994 about 24 students took this bus. Some students then traveled to and/or from the drop off point as additionally far as to and/or from their residences each way. Big Bend National Park
Big Bend National Park is an American national park located in West Texas, bordering Mexico. The park has national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States, and was named after a large bend in the Rio Grande/Río Bravo. Terlingua, Texas
Terlingua ( ) is a mining district and census-designated place (CDP) in southwestern Brewster County, Texas, United States. It is located near the Rio Grande and the villages of Lajitas and Study Butte, Texas, as well as the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The discovery of cinnabar, from which the metal mercury is extracted, in the mid-1880s brought miners to the area, creating a city of 2,000 people. The only remnants of the mining days are a ghost town of the Howard Perry-owned Chisos Mining Company and several nearby capped and abandoned mines, most notably the California Hill, the Rainbow, the 248, and the Study Butte mines. The mineral terlinguaite was first found in the vicinity of California Hill. The population of Terlingua as of 2020 was 78. Lajitas, Texas
Lajitas is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Brewster County, Texas, United States, near the Big Bend National Park. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 75 in 2010. History The settlement is named after the Boquillas flagstone found in the area. "''Lajitas''" translates to "little flat rocks" in Spanish. It was inhabited by aboriginal Mexicans for many years. They were then removed from the area by the Apache and Comanche tribes in the 18th and 19th centuries. The first white settlers came to the area in the mid-1800s. William H. Emory also visited Lajitas in 1852. The community boomed when Mercury (element), quicksilver was discovered 11 miles from the community at the end of the decade. Howard Payne University is a private Baptist university in Brownwood, Texas. It is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Howard Payne College was founded by Reverend Noah T. Byers and Dr. John David Robnett in 1889. The institution is named for its first major benefactor, Edward Howard Payne, who was the brother-in-law of Robnett. Athletic programs include NCAA Division III football, baseball, softball, women's volleyball, men and women's soccer, basketball and tennis. The HPU mascot is a yellow jacket named "Buzzsaw". San Vicente Independent School District
San Vicente Independent School District is a public school district in Brewster County, Texas, Brewster County, Texas (United States, USA). The district has one school – San Vicente Elementary – located on the grounds of Big Bend National Park. It serves students in grades kindergarten through eight who are dependents of people who work at the park. High schoolers zoned to San Vicente ISD attend school in Terlingua Common School District's Big Bend High School. History The school district began in 1898. Thomas J. Miller constructed the first San Vicente ISD school building. The 1929 stock market crash prompted school districts to consolidate into the San Vicente school in 1930.
