Alphonse Gasnier-Duparc
Alphonse Henri Gasnier-Duparc (21 June 1879, Dol-de-Bretagne – 10 October 1945, Saint-Malo) was a French politician. He served as mayor of Saint-Malo, senator for Ille-et-Vilaine (1932-1940) and Naval Minister. He was a member of the Légion d'honneur, the Croix de Guerre, the Mérite maritime, the Mérite agricole and the Palmes académiques. Life The son of Alphonse Charles and Anne Marie Antoinette Robidou,Acte de Naissance n°64 archives Ille-et-Vilaine he studied in Saint-Malo then at the law faculty of the Université de Rennes before becoming a lawyer in Saint-Malo. In 1908, he was elected as a conseiller municipal of Saint-Malo; in 1910, as a conseiller d'arrondissement; in 1913, as a conseiller général ; in 1930, as vice-president of the Conseil général, then as its president from 1935 to 1937. Léon Blum
André Léon Blum (; 9 April 1872 – 30 March 1950) was a French socialist politician and three-time Prime Minister. As a Jew, he was heavily influenced by the Dreyfus affair of the late 19th century. He was a disciple of French Socialist leader Jean Jaurès and after Jaurès' assassination in 1914, became his successor. Despite his relatively short tenures, his time in office was very influential: as Prime Minister in the left-wing Popular Front government in 1936–37, he provided a series of major economic and social reforms. Blum declared neutrality in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) to avoid the civil conflict spilling over into France itself. Once out of office in 1938, he denounced the appeasement of Germany. When Germany defeated France in 1940, he became a staunch opponent of Vichy France. Philippe Pétain
Henri Philippe Benoni Omer Pétain (24 April 1856 – 23 July 1951), commonly known as Philippe Pétain (, ) or Marshal Pétain (french: Maréchal Pétain), was a French general who attained the position of Marshal of France at the end of World War I, during which he became known as The Lion of Verdun (french: le lion de Verdun). From 1940 to 1944, during World War II, he served as head of the collaborationist regime of Vichy France. Pétain, who was 84 years old in 1940, remains the oldest person to become the head of state of France. During World War I, Pétain led the French Army to victory at the nine-month-long Battle of Verdun. After the failed Nivelle Offensive and subsequent mutinies he was appointed Commander-in-Chief and succeeded in repairing the army's confidence. The Popular Front (french: Front populaire) was an alliance of French left-wing movements, including the communist French Communist Party (PCF), the socialist French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO) and the progressive Radical-Socialist Republican Party, during the interwar period.
