Alphabetland
''Alphabetland'' is the eighth studio album by American punk rock band X. Released digitally in April 2020, it is their first studio release in 27years and the first with their original line-up in the past 35years. X released the album with no prior announcement to coincide with the 40th anniversary of their debut album ''Los Angeles'' and credited songwriting to all four members for the first time in their career. The release has received positive reviews from critics. Recording and release The songs on ''Alphabetland'' were written in the 18months leading up to release, except for "Delta 88 Nightmare" which dates back to the late 1970s (a demo track of it was previously released on the 1997 anthology '' Beyond and Back: The X Anthology'' and the 2001 reissue of ''Los Angeles''), and "Cyrano De Berger's Back", which bassist John Doe wrote in the late seventies, and which was originally released by The Flesh Eaters on their 1981 album '' A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die''. X (American Band)
X is an American punk rock band formed in Los Angeles. The original members are vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist-bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake. The band released seven studio albums from 1980 to 1993. After a period of inactivity during the mid-to-late 1990s, X reunited in the early 2000s, and continued to tour, as of 2022. X achieved limited mainstream success but influenced various genres of music, including punk rock, Americana, and folk rock, and is considered one of the most influential bands of their era. In 2003, X's first two studio albums, ''Los Angeles'' and ''Wild Gift'', were ranked by ''Rolling Stone'' as being among the 500 greatest albums of all time. Wayne White (artist)
Wayne Wilkes White (born September 17, 1957) is an American painter, art director, puppeteer, set designer, animator, cartoonist and illustrator. He has won three Emmy Awards for his work. Early life and education In the documentary ''Beauty is Embarrassing'', White says he was born in Sand Mountain, Alabama. After graduating from Hixson High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee (1975) and Middle Tennessee State University ( BFA, 1979), White went to New York City (1980) and worked as a cartoonist and illustrator for a number of publications including ''The East Village Eye'', ''Raw'', ''The New York Times'', and ''The Village Voice''. Career In 1986 he worked on ''Pee-wee's Playhouse'' where his work for his set and puppet designs won three Emmy awards; he also supplied a number of voices on the show. A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die (album)
''A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die'' is the second album from American punk rock band the Flesh Eaters. Released in 1981, it is perhaps their most acclaimed work. The band's roster on this album comprises Dave Alvin (guitar), John Doe (bass), Chris D. (vocals, maracas), Steve Berlin (saxophone, rhythm sticks), D. J. Bonebrake (maracas, snare, marimbas) and Bill Bateman (drums). Critical reception Reviewing the album in 1981 for ''The Village Voice'', Robert Christgau wrote, "this eschews the no-speed-limit egoism of El Lay punk convention for a more matoor view of the world, based on the idea that horror movies are worth taking seriously. Not bad for a laff." AllMusic's Patrick Kennedy later called it "a classic album of trashy-noir darkness, seamy Hollywood dreck, campy blues horror, and Stax-influenced, stripped-down guitar punk". Exene Cervenka
Exene Cervenka (born Christene Lee Cervenka; February 1, 1956) is an American singer, artist, and poet. She is best known for her work as a singer in the California punk rock band X. Music career The 21-year-old Cervenka met 23-year-old musician John Doe at a poetry workshop at the Beyond Baroque Foundation in Venice, California. Cervenka started working there. Billy Zoom (guitar) and John Doe (bass and vocals) founded X in 1977, with D.J. Bonebrake coming aboard as drummer. Doe asked Cervenka to join soon after as a co-lead vocalist, and the duo were also the band's primary songwriters. They released their debut album, ''Los Angeles,'' in 1980 and, over the next six years, five more albums. She learned to play guitar from Dave Alvin of The Blasters. Rob Schnapf
Rob Schnapf is an American record producer and musician. He was the co-producer (along with Tom Rothrock) of Elliott Smith's albums ''Either/Or'', '' XO'' (on which he also played guitar on the song " Baby Britain"), '' Figure 8'' and ''From a Basement on the Hill'', for which he was recruited by Smith's family to complete after Smith's death. Schnapf runs the Mant Sounds studio. Background Schnapf, along with Rothrock and partner Bradshaw Lambert, started Bong Load Custom Records in the early 1990s which is notable for releasing Beck's " Loser" single. Schnapf first heard Beck as he was playing on the street during the annual Sunset Junction Fair. A week later Rothrock saw Beck jump onstage to play in between bands during a show at Jabberjaw and approached him afterwards about recording his songs.
