Alpha Television
Alpha Television was a British limited company which operated television studios in Aston, Birmingham from 1956 to 1970. History The company was formed in 1956 as a joint venture between two newly created Independent Television (ITV) companies, ATV and ABC. The former operated the contract to broadcast programming to the Midlands during the week, the latter at weekends. The respective companies would later establish production centres near London and Manchester (ATV at Elstree, ABC at Teddington and Didsbury), but despite conflicts over contract applications and rivalry over the corporate acronym, the costs of creating separate facilities in the Midlands led to a decision to cooperate. A separate holding company to operate the centre, Alpha Television Services (Birmingham) Limited, was formed. The Independent Television Authority (ITA) was an agency created by the Television Act 1954 to supervise the creation of "Independent Television" (ITV (TV network), ITV), the first commercial television network in the United Kingdom. The ITA existed from 1954 until 1972. Brindleyplace is a large mixed-use canalside development, in the Westside district of Birmingham, England. It was named after Brindley Place, the name of the street (in turn named after the 18th century canal engineer James Brindley) around which it is built. It was developed by the Argent Group from 1993 onwards. Free Radio Birmingham is an Independent Local Radio station based in Birmingham, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Birmingham and the West Midlands. As of September 2022, the station has a weekly audience of 165,000 listeners according to RAJAR. History Launched on 19 February 1974, on 261 metres medium wave, (1152kHz) and 94.8 MHz FM, BRMB was the fourth independent local commercial radio station to begin broadcasting in Britain after LBC, Capital London and Radio Clyde. Alpha Tower
Alpha Tower is a Grade II listed office skyscraper in Birmingham, England. It was designed by the Birmingham-born architect George Marsh of Richard Seifert & Partners as the headquarters of the commercial television company ATV (Associated Television) and part of the company's production studio complex known as ''ATV Centre'', an adjacent shorter tower was planned but was never built.
